I'm not familiar with the new crankseals I got. The old ones were the normal double lipped garlock style. The new ones have a rubber membrane staked to the inside diameter instead of having an inner lip. The membrane has a very small hole in it (relative to the crank journal dia. I assume this will stretch when pushed over the crank journal but I'm nort sure how it is supposed to contain the crankcase pressure. Anyone familiar with this type of seal?

seal

Yes, the new seal is installed with the metal ring facing out. put a little oil on the inside lip and a little sealer on the outside.
Did you take the bottom pan off? If you have it off at present, get the other style seal. It cannot be put in unless the bottom cover is taken of the cylinder. In my opinion, it is a better seal.

Yep the bottom pan is off. On an 039 that's the only way to get at the cylinder. I'm a little confused. Which seal is the better one? The one they gave me, or the original double lipped one.

seal

Get the original. It is more like the seal used in all the pro saws.

I have yet to pressure test a saw with the replacement press in seal and have it pass. It will hold vacuum fine, and I have not tested after it has been installed for awhile. The saw will run OK, but it does not leave me very confident.

Rocky, be carefull what you say about me, Fish may be around the next corner.:D

Thanks. That's what I needed to know. I can't see how the new seal would hold the crankcase pressure as the new style lip would point out. Good for neg pressure, not good for pos press.
