Guys help me out.

I don't have any experience of this saw, but I bought an 041 AV in a job lot of saws very cheap, including its share of the shipping it only cost me about $19 US, sold as needing everythng between the carb and the air filter cover. Poured a little mix into the carb it fires and sounds good for as long as the fuel lasts, but doesn't seem to want to take any fuel from the tank?

So I decide its worth fixing up and finally found another one selling as spare or repairs, but with a bust recoil assembly. Got the new one today and as I already had the first one in pieces, I tried the recoil on the new saw and got it running inside 10 minutes.

My dilemma is both look in similar condition. But the second is a little worse for wear as some of the casings are cracked and due to the fact that the recoil assembly and the fuel tank are one unit, I figure this is going to be a little more costly to make good.

I actually paid more for the second saw than I did the first, but my rationale was that this was still going to be much cheaper than buying parts from a dealer would be (even if they could still get hold of them)

I'm sure I could look out for another one and hopefully find one with parts to sort out both, but what if it too was viable? I can see myself turning into some kind of chain saw equivalent of the old woman with 30 cats!!

The bottom line really is; do you think this is a worthy enough saw to merit trying to get both back in service?

041

Dan, All that I am able to tell you is that I resembled one in similar condition several years ago.It is a screamer and cuts like hello. I will keep it until I able to afford something lighter. IMHO, this saw has character. (so do I) If parts are available for it go to town. By the way, if you email Stihl, the will send you a owners manual. They did for me. Good luck Dan, Ken

Judging by your reply I guess that means you only like to work on the cutting edge latest technology then?

Ken thanks for the insight and tip, I'll see if I can get a manual out of Stihl, Mr. Thompson doesn't seem to have one on his site.

i'm not a fan of the older saws such as the 041's. they are a pain to work on and some parts are expensive. they also dont cut as fast have more vibration, and are much heavier. if i'm going to lug a heavy 041 around i atleast want the cutting speed of an 044 or better.

Check out Ozfleas site.If he doesn't have it,send me a pm,I have it downloaded .Most Stihl parts lists are about 24 to 30 pages,so it would take about 6 e-mails.

Thanks Al, parts lists I have, but I'm trying to get a workshop manual. Would you have one for an 028 too?

I thought Oz was a strictly McC man?

Oz is,so am I but he has a whole bunch of saw makes in his library.I think most in pdf format.A whole bunch of us,worldwide, launched a campaign to get a repository for chainsaw IPL's,manuals etc.It worked well,he's got a real collection of them.I do have the 028 IPL downloaded also if needed.Unfortunately, other that 042/048 ,my manuals are on micro film, and I can't copy them.

hey, I like my 041 AV!

a rugged old saw

Add me to that list! 041 AVE Super. Don't get to use it much as most of my firewood is small enough I don't need a 24" bar. It does get used for a lot of falling and I will also use it for bucking just to have the fun of running it and hearing that gnarly sound.

Yes they are not as fast as the new ones but they ain't all that slow either.

Well, I'm going to try one of them out tomorrow. I don't have the luxury of being able to go off in the woods and felling for fun. Best I can usually muster is a couple logs to try test cuts with in my yard . However, my father in law has a farmer friend with some wood to cut, he's invited me over to try out my saws (bonus for him of course) So I get to do some serious cutting without the concern of getting them into a horizontal orientation first!

Hi Dan, I can send you a bucket of 041 parts for free. These saws were good in their day, but are all but obsolete. Cheers.

Simon just send me a tank/starter and an air filter assembly and I'll be able to have one in each hand (not for very long though!)

I will search around tomorrow. Pm me your address and I will send them via ground.

Dan, head off to this site. -www.stihlusa.com/knowhow/knowhow_catalog.html . They will be happy to help you.And by the way,my 041 will keep up with many others and maby even pass a few.It does not vibrate lie some have stated. The engine has a most distinct pitch to it.It may be a few extra pounds but it is as reliable as high gas prices, Death, and Taxes.

Never have the one you want

Thanks Ken,

I took a look, but they don't have any of the ones I could do with. I took your advice and contacted Stihl UK. They are sending me a copy of the 041 manual. I should have asked them for an 028 and a TS360 manual while I was at it.
