i have a 041 av that seems to eat those plastic starter rings.they are always chewed up in the same spot.to be upfront, ive been buying jobber ones.is this common on these saws or is there that much difference between jobber and genuine stihl ones?

Starter rings:

I have an old 08S, that my father bought in 1965. As far as I know the starter ring ( cup that bolts to the flywheel) has never been changed. It looks to have some sort of nylon insert inside the cup I mentioned. It's getting worn down a bit, but the saw never refuses to start. I'd say, buy an original repacement and try it. This saw always starts on the first or second pull as long as there is gas in the carb and has a clean plug. It's old but reliable. If your cranking and pulling on the saw a lot to start it, I'd say that you have other problems to check out. JMO. Lewis.

it always starts on 2 or 3 pulls.the problem is i only get about 100 pulls on the starter ring.then that plastic insert gets wore down far enough so the starter dawgs wont catch.and ive got new dawgs in it.

dogs

Take a look at the rope rotor. There may be a groove where the dog rests against the rotor when it is at rest. This will let the dogs extend out backwards a bit. If it doesn't unwind the rope, it will slowly wear the plastic ring. If you can get the pins out and turn them, it will remedy this problem.
Also, the dogs must grab into the plasitc ring so they won't slip. A new set of dogs will be sharp, an old set will dull and slip. The old trick was to turn each dog ( or tooth) around for a fresh edge.

AND sometimes the only answer is new parts.

Hello, glad to find this site and especially glad to find this post. Found a rusted bar 041 in the metal dumpster at work and the only thing wrong with it is the plast gear is stripped out. Flipped it over for a test and the thing started... :D

Local dealer not very cooperative or even supportive of this saw. Dang near had to pull teeth to get him to order a new ring.

Stihltech, noticed the dogs were smooth on this one, figured they should be sharp, but I wanted to see the new gear before I ground them or flipped them over.

Any tune up help on this thing would be appreciated (didn't come with a book) Gas / oil mix, plug gap etc. Looking for a good book on one too, especially any history on this series saw (stihl virgin). Saw cuts well, just doesn't start without the gear.
