just joined in. very interesting forum, anyhooooo. i have an older 041, it enters the wood like mad but as soon as the bar in completely in the wood it just starts throwing sawdust. pull it out try another cut, you get the same thing. the chain is sharp, but i think i may have some strange wear on my bar, the chain will rock back and forth in the groove. it is a 20 inch hardnose and oregon chain. is it time to replace the whole mess with a new chain and bar.
thanks in advance. look forward to your insight...

Time for a new bar and chain. What's happening is that the bar and chain are so worn the chain lays over to one side and won't cut straight. It's been doing this for a while but it was ok as the chain wasn't cutting a tighter radius than the bar could follow. Now the chain cuts a while then the curve gets so tight the bar can't make it through the turn. A new bar and chain and a sprocket while your at it will fix you right up. I have a co-worker who had the same problem on his 041. He inherited the saw and hated the thought of changing anything from what his father had out on the saw. I finally convinced him that his father would want to see the saw maintained rather than abused with worn out parts. BTW, Welcome to the forum.

the plot thickens

i have a stihl bar #3003 000 9221, i think this is a 1.6 groove bar. but seems my chain is a .050 , the only numbers on the chain is a 75 on the drives. seems this would certainly explain the wobbliness. weird setup, i just bought this saw about three days ago. i am new at this but i am trying.
so i guess my question is, is the .063 the same as the 1.6?
thanks

The bar is a 20" .063 non-roller-nose and if the number 75 is an Oregon number, it's 3/8×.063.

.063" = 1.6mm

As two your 041,
(I have one also), have you tried turning the bar over? If you are going the new bar and chain route, it may not hurt to look at the drive sprocket. While on this topic, does the automatic oiler work? this may be the cause of the bars demise. Does the chain have a film of oil on it? Ken

thanks for the info

checked the bar at work today, between the grooves it is .063 inches, the chain is right at .050 inches. i bought this off ebay , i think it was just throwed together. i am gonna try the right chain first. see if that helps, little short on funds, the usual story.
the bar checks out good all the way around, i think the chain was killed on another bar. like i said ill try it. if it doesnt help ill have a real nice full chisel for my new bar.
thanks again
