hello to all, I'm looking to buy a 044 or a 046? can anyone tell me witch is the better one?? or a 044 Magnum or a 046 Magnum?? I'm very confused, can you help l me with power output and weight ratios, thanks matt

Personally I haven't a lot of hours on either especially the 044 although I recently bought an 044 and run it about 45 minutes. I run 2 differant 046's about 10 hours. My 044 has an 25" full comp 3/8 p. chain and I would say it doesn't feel like an easy pull for it through 18" dead oak like it would be with an 046 and I am more used to running my ms660 with an 25" bar which is a piece of cake for it. The 044 did pretty good in a big live cherry but I would have to say the power feels more like midsize power whereas the 046 feels more like a bigboy for power. I will probably try an skiptooth chain on my 044 which I think will help it keep the rpm up to where it performs best. I think the 044 is over a lb lighter then the 046.

STOP !!!!!
Just go buy the 441 and be done with it instead of reading through all of the material you will find in the search. Or get the 460 they both :rockn:  :rockn:

At the time I bought my 'big' saw I chose the 046 because it was there and the 044 wasn't . I have a 28" bar on it, yes too long but it covers all I ever need to do. It was just a little sluggish at first , but after loosening up both the intake and exhaust it has really come to life and will rpm and cut just fine. I would think with a more reasonable bar length , skip chain , and intake and exhaust work, it would be a screamer.

Carefull Rich, I've been chastised for recommending the search function before. Apparently it's often inop. :taped:

On the topic of the search function, I noticed that your search function fails to open some times. Next thing to do is right click on it and a larger field with more options will open every time.

I have noted exactly the same.

Go with the 046 I have one with a 28" bar and full skip chain works good for my falling needs I wouldn't go with a shorter bar its a waste of a saw.

Sorry, guys, but someone has to do it, it's tradition!

"Have you considered a Dolmar? They have great alternatives to Stihl and Husky..."
 :greenchainsaw:

PS-7900 of cource, but don't tell Ben that I said that!

He would rather have the Husky 372xp.

Both are well proven altenatives to the Stihs mentioned in this tread.
