044 #2 flywheel

ok now that i got 044 #1 squared away i have a second that i bought for parts but all it needs are crank bearings since i got a set im gonna do it but i cant seem to get this darned flywheel off its hard how do i pull the flywheel? do i need a special tool? cant wait till the new saw is in these beaters are driving me chainsaw crazy and i cought the bug im looking at every saw i see for sale
 
Spend the $20 or so and buy the correct Stihl tool. If you pry or try to pull with a conventional puller, you'll either break it or crack it. Cracks are worse - you may not notice them until it's way too late!

Use the AS search feature - "flywheel puller" - you'll learn more than you wanted to.

Also, before you start... get a copy of the Sthil service manual for the 044. This and many of you next questions are all explained in there..
 
put some 1/4” rope in your cylinder through the sparkplug hole and try a ratchet with a cheater bar or use an impact if you have access to one. The rope trick works great on small engines.
 
i got the nut off no problem its just the only other saws ive pulled the flywheel on were worn enough it slid right off

Seen to many busted cranks because of impacts besides that puller works on several saws,,,,,,,,,,,,JMHO

I have never seen a tapered fit flywheel like an 044 worn so it just slides off. They are on tight... but come off every easily with the correct tool.

Make sure you use a torque wrench when you put it back on...
 
well hell you guys could have told me from the start that the threads on the flywheel were 1/2" npt i just got some specs from a buddy off his (were 1100 miles apart otherwise i would have borrowed it) ill have one made up in 20 min ive got a base in light machining and this tool is simple! i took a quick look on ebay i may just market these for $10 a piece instead of $30
 
they are NOT 1/2 NPT.. It's a metric thread for a start... If you mess up the thread the next guy (maybe you) will hate you..

the 1/2 or 16mm pipe fits with almost no play in the flywheel if your cretin it is a different size please let me know before i do screw it up but like i said it fits quite snug in there and bottoms out on the flywheel
 
The THREADS are wrong!!!!! Sure even I can wind a whitworth bolt in metric hole, but why???

Do an AS search - someone figured out exactly what metric thead the puller uses.

Buy or make the correct tool. If you are gettig into saws you'll use it a lot. It fits most of Stihl's flywheels..

Flywheels should not be messed with. at 14,000+ rpm you don't want to have it come apart.
 
well ill go rent a puller tomorrow and mic it if its the same i say you owe me the rental fee nah just kidding Danny miced his and said it was .503 inches but i will see for my self and make sure before i break my saw
 
i have used an automotive a/c clutch service tool, it is basically the same tool.
any local auto parts store that rents a/c clutch service set will have it in the set.
 
Listen to Andy...The threads that are inportant are the female threads inside the hub on the flywheel...about 26mm or just over one inch...you have to get the exact tool or you risk damaging the crank, the flywheel or yourself...

Where are you going to rent the correct puller? Take the diassembled saw to a Stihl dealer and pay him $5 to pop the flywheel for you. Never use an automotive three jaw and pull on the outside of the flywheel while pressing in the center. Even it appears to work, think about a future owner with a potentially cracked flywheel. To me, this is like welding without a helmet.. sure you can do it, but..

Again, it's 26mm diameter, 1.5mm pitch threads for the 066 poly styles, and 22mm for the 026/36/044 etc type. Forget any fractional equivalents.. they are meaningless in this context.

well i went to a saw shop not only did i get two flywheels pulled for free but the puller he used was a 1/2 piece of pipe with a nut welded to it said hes been doing it this way since he opened and never once had a problem oh and i test drove the 441 nice saw but way too bulky compared to the 044 460 and 660 i got
