So I got my used (new to me) 044 probably 5 days ago, I got it filled it up lit it off 3rd pull and all was great now yesterday I went to start it frist run of the day and I could not get it to start, so I pulled the spark plug and it was dry so I pulled it acouple time without the plug in it then put the plug in and it lit off, so yesterday I went to after it sat for probably 6 hours I went to get it going and I couldnt get it going to I tried pulling the plug and blowing it out again that didnt work so I kept pulling and pulling then it finally went but when it was ideling and I tried to give it throttle it would bog then after acouple minutes it was fine so I tuned the low end so it wouldnt do that anymore, then today I could not get it going so I tried the plug thing nothing, then I filled it up (had half a tank) and I put alil bit of fuel down the carb, then three pulls and it fired then quit, then pulled some more and it went put it was doing the boging thing again so I tuned it correctly this time and it ran great now Im wondering whats going on, Im not shure if it was the tuning or if I have a facume leak or if something is burning up, compression still feels good and Iam runing 50-1 mix with redline two stroke oil and I mixed it just alil rich.

any ideas guys?

so are you guys thinking a ait leak some where?

No, not at first thought,,,,,, as it runs good when it runs?

Vac leaks or crank-case leaks would not go away and run good some of the time.

This is just me, but I look for excuses to go thou the carb and clean them out if they need it or not sometime. Picture sticky flappers in the carb could make a temprimental runner also.

Edit: impalse line or fuel supply line leaks are possable and be intermitant,,,,, on that saw, the impalse line rund just below the intake boot.

if it had a bad impaulseit would run bad all the time right? onece its going it is great, this is my second chainsaw and my first stihl

At slow speeds, or trying to start, a small leak in the inpaulse line will act up and not draw the fuel to the carb, but be fine at speed and ok with a restart.

Same as the fuel pump side of the carb, as speed seems to be an overkill, starting can be a bear.

well I just went out and started it after sitting for 4 hours and it started, I had to turn up the idel when I got the saw. there is something right above the fuel tank cap I think its a vent for the tank but anyways it would leake fuel so I pulled out the screw and put some sealant in and put the screw back in and it started fine after that but i just pulled the screw out and took the sealant out thinking maybe that was the prob so I guess Ill see tommorow.

That's the tank vent.repace the hose with a new one and put the screw back in without sealer. that has to breath.

Do what suger says.. You need the vent or the saw will run real lean and then quit as the tank vacuum builds. It will also be a SOB to start after it cools off..

I'm no mechanic, but it doesn't hurt ot check it out. I think the 044 didn't have an impulse line, it was a direct conection from crankcase to carb.

It has an impulse line. Hard to have a direct connection when the carb is mounts to the tank and connects to the crankcse via the boot.

I didn't see anyone mention your choke. If your choke flap is not closing all the way you will have starting problems. Also if it is distorted slightly even it can make it hard starting. If you haven't take the air cleaner off and check it.
Its tricky but with most saws I can get my thumb over the the carb air inlet and choke it to compare the saws chokes performance. I usually put my foot in the rear handle and a knee on top the saw to hold it down while choking it with the thumb and pulling the starter with the other hand. If you have a big stout vise you could clamp the bar in it to hold it. Use your chain brake and keep your chain clear when doing this of course.

I had a similar prob with my 390

i would take off the muffler and try to look at the piston.Im no pro at it but i had the same prob then the shop fixed it.They replaced the fuel line and filter. Then it ran great and when i took the muffler off the piston and rings are wasted. Not sayin that has anything to do with it but it cant hurt to look.

The choke is working fine, yea Im really shure that the piston and every thing is good to go, has tons of compression I keep on hurting my hand.

Elastostart handle from stihl will absorb a great deal of the shock when pulling the starter. Is there any reason the timing could be off ? Is your fuel tank clean, nothing floating or settling in there? I would clean and put a carb rebuild kit in it if that hasn't been done. Pressure and vacume test might be in order to eliminate some guessing.
