hello....new to this forum....looks good... i own three stihls and one redmax, and was just wondering if there are any 056 magnum owners that think this is the best saw that they have ever manufactured. I havent had any problems with mine and seems like the torque on this machine is superior to any other. Maybe stihls all time best?????

There are lots of loyal fans of the 056

It depends on the true series.....the Mag II SHOULD be one of the best. A lot of the magnums were rebadged supers....not the greatest

For its day... no question. I have a few in pieces on the bench at home, and about 8 at work, most needing new ignitions - the Bosch ignitions are no longer available and fail when hot. The SEM ignition works great but needs the newer flywheel. Apart from that, they are a great saw.

I have got a couple of those as well. Always end up with half the system that I need for those saws. Same pieces are bad on everyone that I have seen. 056 electrical and 044 rod/crank bearings, some kind of saw god punishment for me.

thanks for the replys men....lakeside, sounds like ignition problems is common on those saws if you have that many for repair...just wondering what the total repir cost would be for the SEM changeover...THANKS

Love mine....each of the ones I've owned. I've owned standards, Supers and Mag IIs. The Mag II is really the only way to go with this series. The standard and even the Super is too heavy for what it is nowadays. Even back then. The Supers would be fine, but the Mag II makes it look smaller than it is. I think the saw has a lot of romance to it. I like the way it feels, sounds and cuts. I've got one now I'm rebuilding, and it'll just be up for decoration in my front room when it's done. It runs good, but it'll be too pretty to run. And to add to the "romance" of it, Jerry Beranek used one. If you know how Jerry is, that's enough said! (He's a nice guy to boot.)

I picked up a 056 MagII with a 32in bar on ebay for stump cutting duty. It did a nice job on the 30" dbh thorny locust stump. Being new to this large older saw what are the quirks of the saw. Best bar/chain set up? etc. The one I noticed is that it ran out of bar oil before fuel.

If you buy the parts NEW it's about $250... Used - maybe $100 or so..

You need to adjust it back. The 56 had an oil pump adjustment range that allowed the USER to decide how much to oil... unlike today's pumps...

It might be worth checking opinions further here before you rush to change - I have had a couple of bad SEM modules on 056 Supers and decided to go for a coil and flywheel from a points system from 045 with a generic ignition module that cost about $15. This seems to give a slightly fatter spark than the others, but I haven't had it long enough to know if it will last. The used supply of 045 coils seems much better than that of 056 ignition modules of either type at the moment.

Either way the 056 is a great saw. Less whizz but more grunt!
