Hello I got a used 064 from a guy with a .404 bar and chain 24" The bar is of stihl manufacture. I modified the muffler by drilling two 1/2" diameter holes in the front of the muffler. It has full comp .404 chain and a 8 tooth stihl replaceable sprocket ring. The chain sometimes in big cuts stops since it isn't getting enough oil. Is it possible that the 8 tooth ring is spinning the chain too fast. Should I go to a 7 tooth? And yes I have thinned the bar oil with kerosene for winter weather. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

It's possible, but I've never seen a problem. I assume you have your oiler turned up all the way? If so, you may have a problem with your oil pump or hoses etc.

Within limits imposed by viscosity of the bar oil, the oil output is proportional to the speed of the chain, so higher rpm pumps more oil than low rpm.

Is you bar oil hole clear? Does it pump vigourously with no chain/bar installed?

I'll have to check the hole where it comes out of the saw. It might be a pump problem, but I hope not. Or could the screen be plugged up in the tank? Oil is turned up all the way max. Bar oil holes are clean, etc. Can I fish the oil line out of the tank and see what it looks like. Maybe there is a problem with the line or something! Thanks!

you have to take the clutch and pump off to get the oil hose out of the tank... Yes, you might be able to fish it, but won't be able to clean it etc. I usually take off the pump, blow out the line with air, then reassemble. Cleaning the tank out with gas ever few years is a good idea.

The most likely cause of "pump" problems is the wire from the pump worm is missing the end and won't drive reliably as it's not in the drum notch. The second likely cause is the hose FROM the pump to the chain hole - it melts near the pump. Usually you can see this as oil pumps into the back of the clutch instead of the oil outlet. Replacing this hose is a PAIN - my least favorite job!
