Hey guys getting ready to rebearing a 066 crank. I read somewhere that the innner bearing covers should be removed for better lubercation. Cannot find the source where the information came from or if it is acurate. I bought aftermarket bearings not stihl. I bought them with both seal covers in place but the bearing dealer said I can remove anyone of the covers with ease. To me it sounds like a good idea to expose the bearings to fuel mix for lube. It's driving me crazy that I can't remember where the thought came from. Hell maybe I dreamed it?? Anyone have any suggestions??? Thanks The Hoosier

John,

I bought an 066 with a bad crank bearing last year. When I opened it up, it had an aftermarket (not Stihl) set of crank bearings. The inner shields were still in place, and they were both blue.

I would offer this.

1. Buy/install the stihl bearings

2. take the inner shields off of yours if that's what you intend to install.

You are exactly correct that the lubrication needs to get into the bearings in order for them to have any life at all.

Hey Jwoods thanks for the response. I was kind of concerned at first about not using actual stihl bearings but the bearings in the saw I'm fixing are not stihl. Maybe that's why it needs fixed. Heck the bearings I picked up are from a local bearing shop and they say they are just as good. I'm going to try it with the inner seals off and just wait and see what happens. It will have to improve the life of the bearings by being directly lubed. I hope!! The Hoosier

Just the thin metal shields. If you're referring specifically to an 066, the bearings only have shields to the inside. The outside of the bearing goes against the oil seal and is wide open. Makes sense?

The aftermarket bearings that I buy have both sheilds in place...I remove the inners as they (the bearings) need to be lubed...Stihl, Husky, Jonsered....they all charge way too much money for the same bearing...here the bearing runs about 4 bucks cdn aftermarket...and 20 from the distributor....

Dennis: Which manufacture of bearings do you use? Also, for an 044 Stihl, I heard one bearing is a 6202 do you know what( care to devulge?)the other # is? The tech at the Stihl dealer gave it in measurements that didn't match the width in our bearing books at work. Thanks Mike

The 335XPT Husky has the crank sahft seals on the inside of the bearing so you can't pick the seals out. Turns 14,000 RPMs and have some out there that are over five years old. They usually get busted up or ruined from abuse.
