I bought a 066 at a small shop today. It has been out back in a shed
for over 2 years with many other saws. He put gas in it and 5th pull
it kicked 6th pull it started and stayed running. He let me pull the muffler
off and look inside, piston & wall looked good from what I know. Took a
compression test it was 140 lbs. Got it home put on 25" bar went to
the woods, 2 pulls and it was running,it will out cut my 460.
So I want to make a milling saw out of it. My mill came today so I need
to get this old saw ready I can't stand the idea of the mill going on the new460.

Now for the ?s
1-How can I tell about how old it is? it has the H & L screw stops and
ser# 143791167 if that helps

2-The left front rubber mount is bad, How hard are they to replace?
and would you replace all of them?

3-If I idle it down slow enough so chain won't turn it will die
and by ear it sounds too slow, pulled clutch cover off, the holes
in the clutch shoes where the springs hook have slots worn in
them. So with the holes worn and maybe weak springs could
this be my problem?

4-What all can I take off of it with out any special tools or big surprises,
to clean it.

Any other things to look for, or in info you can give would be a big help.

I payed 3 bills for it he has another one, didn't try to start it, buy pulling
the rope it has very little compression, he said $150 for it.

Thanks, Gary

066

Sounds like a later 066
The clutch needs to be replaced, it is worn out .
Replace the bad mounts as needed, a cap with a screw under it holds it in.The clutch is left hand thread. Hold the piston with rope through the sparkplug hole.

dibbs on the second deal o66, if you are not buying.

It's from March of 2000. Compression isn't great (it will cut fine), but nothing a set of rings won't fix assuming the exhaust side of the cylinder is fine. Replace the clutch shoes and springs.

If you are going to work on the saw, you should get a workshop manual. To see how to take off the clutch, search on "066 oiler" - there is a series from me on how to upgrade the oiler and the clutch removal is detailed.
