Hi all:

I have a brand new 36 inch Stihl bar on an new-to-me (but older) 066 and I don't think the oiler is working properly.

I was milling for several hours on Saturday and the chain was definitely not getting enough lurication There was a very
small film of oil on the driver tangs but none noticeable at all on
the links or teeth or anywhere on the bar. The oiler was adjusted to max (fully clockwise) but it only pumped approx 1/4 of a tank of oil for each tank of fuel.

I know that I should have an auxilliary oiler on this beast (getting one soon) but it seems to me that the saw should be pumping out more oil than it is.

I checked the bar oil hole and it was clean. There was some oil getting through to the chain but not much.

After I was finished milling for the day, I took the bar off and cleaned up the saw and the bar groove. After I put it back together the saw was pumping out plenty of oil.

My three theories are now:

1. Bar groove was plugged with sawdust which prevented proper oiling.

2. Oil pump does not work correctly while saw is on its side. I read somethere that the oil pump is driven off the clutch. I am using the Oregon rim drive system. Anyone ever had a problem like this?

3. Bar oil was too thick. I doubt this is the cause though, since I tried diluting with Diesel and it made no difference.

Any suggestions/comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Don

Same Issue with my newer 066 and long bar for milling.

The most it might put out is a 1/3-1/2 of a tank of oil to a tank of gas.

I think I will have to order an aux oiler. and another long bar to put it on.

As far as I see it puting a oil fitting on the tip will make the bar useless for anything but milling.

Hey Timberwolf:

Why do you think the drilled bar would be useless for anything but milling? I would think it would be quite useable if you remove the oiler fitting.

Also, are you the guy with the GB mill? I just bought one from Jeff. I am very impressed by how easy it is to adjust and use.

Anyways, thanks for the information.

stock output oiler is .21 cc/min this is .27cc/min

The 066 oilers have been the same for a while, my red eye one has the same one thats on a new one.

Thanks Jim. Sounds like just the ticket.

How do you get at the oil pump to fix/repair it? I haven' t ripped it apart yet and I want to know what I am in for!

Don

yep its a 10 minute job max to get at the oiler, Id drain the tank and spray out the oil hose and pick up with carb cleaner or the like.

i think they recommend that oiler for bars 30" and over..

Hey Don...

Small world-
I have auxiliary oilers if you need one- give me a shout
I can airmail that to Canada
Jeff

Could oiler output be increased simply by removing the adjustment stop on the oil pump?

Don't think that will work. The adjustment is some sort of cam that controls the pump piston travel. 90 degrees is all the adjustment that you can use. 90 degrees more will be the min setting again. Another 90 at you're back at max. And over and over. When the stops are wore away it takes a bit of figuring to find max. I just leave it there.
