I forgot I didn't have a shirt on. I left the bar off so I could crank it, its tricky with the busted handle.
I love my new baby... she needs a little work. :)

Allrighty then.

Hey Butch,

I'd like to be able to see it, could you attach an image here maybe?

Glen

It's alright, just put down the saw and one of the AS members will be by soon to pick it up for you, you'll be alright. Who ever the AS member is please send me the saw at your cost. I Have a safe place for it on a shelf. It will be surounded by more of its own and will be less likely to eat the shirt off its next operator.

By the gas cap is the vent, and it looks like the tubing(?) that fits over it is missing... its just a 3/4 inch stem sticking out. When I turn it sideways, fuel pours out. This can't be right, eh?

My cheapo free Marlboro digcam died, Glens. :(

Third bump... I feel so...

I'm gonna take her apart tomorrow after she and I dance with an elm...

Can someone give me a ballpark figure as to how old this saw might be?
The guy said he bought it used in '90.

It's not too old, looks like a more recent model. Also seems to have the unusual jungle muffler. Where's this one made?

John, that 090 pic came from the net. The muffler on mine doesn't look quite like that.
I have no idea where the saw came from.

The 090G has a different muffler than the direct drive saws, it vents away from the gear housing.
There is supposed to be a piece of tubing on that nipple, witha "grub screw" stuck in it. Probably stihl available.

Made in West Germany

Since I've meet my new sweetheart, I've been reading threads and looking at 090 stuff, and now I'm proud to say I can identify an 090 from an 090 G at 75 yards. Dunno 'bout an 090 AV yet.
There IS a difference in physical characteristics, the 090 may be more powerful, but the G just plain LOOKS COOLER!
And the older, rounded lines in the bodystyle are SWEET!

I didn't use it on the elm today, I was skeered. No handle, no chainbrake... I'll wait til I fix the handle. My saw guy said he could get it.

Man, these are like guitars, or guns, or subwoofers... I want MORE!:blob2:

The AV version has a bulkier rear handle mount and a bar or pipe connecting the rear handle to the front handlebars.

Happy cutting, you're one lucky guy for scoring this puppy.

The lack of a chain break bothered you? HAHA

Get that handle fixed and send it over here... i will keep the chain tight;).

Funny thing is the guy who sold it probably feels he's one lucky guy for getting a buck and a quarter for it.

Hey, Butch, I didn't think that photo was your saw since I couldn't see that the handle was broken.  I would kind of like to see that.  For whatever reason that video email web site don't work right here.

Glen

This makes me wonder how many other good deals like this are sitting around in someone's garage. I know a guy with a 088 that 'doesn't run'. I might try and get that off him, if the price is right.

So the gear driven saws are mainly for milling? Am I understanding this right?

Glens, I shut that video down.

Gear drives were mostly for running real long bars in real big trees. They were more popular a long time ago to get more power out of the less efficient motors of the day. Remember, too that the gearbox has its own oil which needs to be checked periodically.

Gearbox oil?

Hmmm. I wonder where it is? I see the gas cap on the left, and the oil on the right... is it inside the housing?

When were chain brakes first put on this saw? That would give me an idea of how old it is. I wish this puppy could talk, I would sure like to know its history!

Tell you what just to ease your pain on the saw as a whole I will give you double what you paid for it. I know where their is a nice museum that that saw would look nice in. rite chaisaw57
Seriously looks like a nice saw those finds are far and few between.

I don't think the G ever had a chainbrake. You can probably get the manual from Stihl, or at least a copy of it. They are frequently on ebay. This is the page w/ the gear lube info.
