Well I purchased what looked to be a 090 off of ebay. It showed up today. NO markings. I took the clutch off and it only has three shoes. Before I detach that massive carb. Did The 070 clutch fit the 090 crank? Or do I have to expose the piston now to determine the make? Sorry, NO pics yet.

I know the 070 clutch has only 3 shoes. What I was wondering is if they could have put a 070 clutch on a 090 crank.

I have read the other threads about the difference between the two saws a more than a couple times. The Item number for the auction was 4328585244. That will give you some pics of the outside of the saw. The nut that hold the clutch wasn't even hand tight so the seller checked the clutch also. That's why I'm asking the question if the 070 clutch would go on the 090.

TK- what you have there is an 070. The muffler pictured only fits an 070 because the exhaust port on the 070 cylinder is narrower than an 090 and that muffler will not match the wider mounting ears for the 090. In my opinion you did ok on the price, but it's going to need a lot of work. You can actually put the 090 cylinder and piston on this 070 case, as well as the 090 muffler, then you would have an 090.

The 070 only used a three-shoe clutch because it didn't have the massive torque that the 090 did. Yes, that clutch will fit the crank on either an 090 or an 070, the crankshaft is the same. If you swap out your cylinder and piston, you don't have to swap out the clutch unless you really want to.

Travis, from what I see in my 090 repair manual I guess it's possible for the 070 clutch to fit the 090 but l doubt it would hold up. If this is any help the 070 weight, dry powerhead w/out bar and chain is 23.6 lb, w/AV system it's 26.0 lb. The 090 is 25.3 dry w/out bar and chain, 26.9 w/AV system. Ok, the piston bore of the 070 is 58mm (2.28") while the 090 bore is 66mm (2.6") Stroke is the same for both.

Thanks guys

I thought it was 070 as soon as I pulled the clutch. I was questioning it from the get go because of the muffler. I'll see what the seller says, but I was trying to get a 090. I can't believe how much heavier it is then my 084.

the seller of the saw says that it is indeed a 090. He says that he has owned at least a dozen 090s and 3 of them which have had the aluminum mufflers. He usually gets a premium for the "good" mufflers because they don't rot out. But he will gladly refund my money when he gets the saw. I'm still trying to confirm that this saw is a 070 or a 090. Can somebody that has a 090 measure the diameter of the starter cover? The same request of a 070 user.
