Can anyone here assist in the process for resetting the pull start recoil spring on an 1-86 gear drive? I marked the position prior to removing the cover only to fully clean the area including a degrease of the spring area. Figured out how to insert dril rod to engage it to rewind and when attempting to start the saw it lost its engagement. I’ve seen videos of the difficulty on complete disassembly on this . I did not take off the rope winder part during the clean up. Any help appreciated! Thanks

Wind the rope on the spool, pull it out 1-2 turns, hold the pulley still and wind the rope up, hold the recoil cover in place and re-install the screws that hold it on. These saws are one of the easier saws to re-spool the rope on.

Thank you for the quick response. The spring appears to be disengaged from the spool. This is what I need assistance with doing. I put a drill rod in the hole after winding the top back on, turned the spool to creat Twain, had it all back together, then when trying to start the saw, the recoil came disengaged again. I don’t believe the spring g is broken.

It is hard to see in your photos, but I suspect the outside hook on your spring has failed and the spring has slipped into the housing. It is a simple matter to take the cotter pin out and remove the pulley to confirm.

On this 840, someone before me solved the problem by simply wiring the end of the spring to the starter.

New 51665 springs are available, or you can probably reform the loop on the end of yours. Heating it up with a torch makes the task a bit easier, field repair of the starter spring on a 795 back in 2009.

If you need a new spring I have NOS, good used, and even several aftermarket ones offered by NAPA and others in the day.

Mark,
The end of the spring is still intact in its notch at the bottom. I want to take off the spool , however I’ve never done that and have seen videos where that spring pops out and is tough to get back in. I’m pretty mechanically inclined, just have not done this and looking for guidance on how to proceed to get it back in order.

It is dead simple, just leave the outer end engaged in the housing and wind the spring in.

You may discover the hook on the inside is broken, or sometimes if the engine kick back when stopping it will unhook or deform the end of the spring. It is a good practice to pull the starter rope out a foot or so when switching the engine off to avoid problems like that.
