You need to figure out how many drive links you need for the bar and get a chain custom made for it. If you don't use a Stihl bar or Oregon, then it won't match the Stihl or Oregon link count. You could just try a 68 link chain, but, take the saw and bar to your local saw shop and have them make a chain for it, then, write the DL count on the top of the saw so next time you'll know. I have to deal with this every day when a customer comes in and says "you made it for me last time, please make another", but can't remember what length I made for him...

if its made for a stihl its probably gonna need 67 dl. add a link or mabe grind back at the back end of the bar. i had to do that once. before u do it look at it,, study it and make sure it will work. mine works fine and oils fine . i can use either 66or 67.

I have taken a old chain fron a poulan to check DL The count was 66 DL when matched to bar an saw head. now this old chain was a 18" " 72DL stihl. Are all drive lenths the same measurements. The stihl chain seemed to a heaver chain. This bar and chain deal is my frist with bar calling for chain with 66 DL and the two not work

If the chains were different pitches, they won't have the same drive link count for the same bar length. Pitch is the distance between the drive links (correctly measured by measuring 3 rivets of chain, and diving by 2). A .325" chain has a pitch of 0.325", 3/8" chain has 3/8" between drive links.

I'm guessing you have a problem with getting the wrong pitch of chain, so your chain is too short. 66DL of .325" chain is not the same as 66DL of 3/8" chain. The easiest way to get the correct length of chain, is for you to take your saw, with the bar, and go to your dealer, he can check which pitch it is, and find or make the correct chain to fit. Then get him to write down what the pitch and drive link count is for that bar and chain. Then don't lose this info for the next time you need a chain.

If you take the saw, and put the bar on it, then put the bar nuts on without the sprocket cover, then take a string and measure the entire distance around the bar and drive sprocket, then divide this by the pitch of chain you are using, you can calculate what number of drive links you need.

Oregon online selector guide and the Sugihara guide for Stihl 028 calls for 67 drive link .325 chain on a 16" bar.

Here is some of the bar applications for Sugihara bars.

I Have check with Baily's they do not have as many DL as needed I have located a 16" chain with 68 DL but have backed off because it could be two short. I get confused with chain lenths and number of DL Why not a 18" chain with same pitch and gauge It will match up with saw sprocket and bar sprocket????? A 68 DL chain is longer than a chain with 66 DL

16" bar and chain

You may not believe this I placed bar on saw then put bar nut on with out cover A old used Stihl 16" chain fitted perfect 66DL When I placed the chain togeather stihl was two DL longer. Oregon has 66DL yet a inch short I know the use chain has stretched some Should I have two or four DL added to the chain if dealer will do it

Jack,

Don't get an 18" for a 16" bar it will be way long. You need a 67 drive link 325/50. They'll make it right up for you at any shop, or Bailey's etc.. They'll charge you .20-.25 cents a drive link is normal. Also make sure you crank the chain adjuster all the way back too start.
