Looking to clearcut the red and white pines and go into a christmas tree business. Not a lot of people knocking down my door for the job. Any references out there?

Here are two locals for you:

You can make a lot of Swedish candles out of your pine
by cutting them into 24 inch soft wood bolts and you can
sell them to the local campgrounds and grocery stores.

The resin in the pine is good for making a one log camp fire
and it keeps the bugs away.

There is recent post about the swedish candles on the site here.

Gutchess Lumber in Cortland, NewYork Gutchess Lumber - Home of Cortland & Latrobe Hardwood Brands

Double Aught lumber in Owego, New York 607-659-7850

You wil probably get a quicker response from Double Aught
as they buy a lot of soft wood stumpage.

Would you hate me terribly if I wanted to buy a few pieces of
your stumpage from you to make totem poles?

I am retired and would like to make Totem Poles for my home property
and as gifts to family and friends.

pine soft wood stumpage

Thanks much for the reply.

Ideally if the population of soft wood trees per acre
is high they can come in with a tracked feller buncher
and also a delimber to clear all the branches off the
soft wood sawlogs.

The harvesting process is a bit messy in practice,
but they will normally clean up as long as the contract
has the stipulation/requirement that they clean up and
or shred the limbs that the delimber strips off the sawlogs
prior to loading them on the log bunks of the trucks and
trailers using a log loader mounted on a ten wheeler or a
separate self propelled log loader to load the 10 wheel
trucks and semi-trailers.

Forewarned is forarmed, and you need to be sure they
do not leave any stumps to deal with writing in the contract
that the entire clearcut is be sawed at ground level leaving NO
stumps to deal with.

I am not sure if it was the Gutchess Lumber tree cutters that
opened a swath of soft wood on Route 281 near their mill a
few years ago, but his area needed to be cleared for the widening
of Route 281. What was left was a mess where the trees were
cut at waist level and the stumps were left behind after the sawlogs
were dragged out and it was a mess.

This can be avoided as long as the contract stipulates/requires that
the stumpage is cut flush with the ground surface.

Logging in snow often leaves that result around here. It's not too bad skidding in deeper snow once the road gets packed down, but many fallers (and i've been guilty of it) get lazy and don't stomp the snow down around the tree before cutting.
We get that when tapping trees too-we tap at waist height and when the snow melts you need a step ladder to reach them.:hmm3grin2orange:

I am about 30 miles from you and can offer you some info that may help sell your wood. the best market if your wood has any size to it is in Andover NY there is a guy there buying pine to put into log cabins. The next market would be for pallet wood that again would depend on size. If you contact the guy in Andover he can give you the name of a local guy that may be able to help you out. I know there is one contractor in this area who has trailers loaded with red pine and the bigger stuff is headed to his place. The people buying the stuff to be chipped and used for bio fuel are not buying now and there prices are so low that I doubt you could even give away your red pine today. The mills mentioned Double Aught and Gutchess buy standing hard wood and would not be intrested in your pine. Sorry I could not be of more help but at least it will give you another direction to look...Bob

Bob,

you're correct, i contact both mills mentioned previously and zilch on the soft woods. The majority of my poles are probably too small for log cabins. Those that are big enough are around the borders of the lot. i'd glady take the contact information for the guy in Andover. Never know, maybe someone needs to make a couple thousand pallets. you can reply here or private message me. whichever works for you.
thanks again everyone for the information. much appreciated and if you've got more contacts keep them coming.
