I posted this earlier in another section! sorry if you're reading it again!

This is a stupid question, but I need to know for sure.

A buddy of mine is running a 25in bar on his ms 310. I checked stihls spec for that powerhead and it's maximum bar is listed at 20.

I know he doesn't need a bar that long for how little he uses it, but I'm wondering if there are any mechanical disadvantages to running too long a bar. ie, wasted rpm, excessive motor wear, etc.

I admit it looks sweet to have a huge bar but I think he should stay within specs and not sacrifice chainspeed or worse, equipment damage. Am I an idiot for thinking this way?

Thanks in advance for your input!

Thanks GASMAN!!!

The 310 is sold by Stihl with up to a 25 inch bar.. we sell them all the time.. Ignore Stihls web site...

Works GREAT with a full skip...

Lake, you work at a stihl svc shop? if stihls site should not be counted on what can i put on my 361? right now i have 20". i want 18" but what's the max?

I had a 310 with a 24" (which actually the 25" depending on where you look.)

I run my 361 now all the time with a 24". I will run it with an 18" climbing though when the job is just a bit too much for the 200T. Max on a 361 would be a 28" if you need it that badly.

Thanks fishhuntcutwood!

i have no use for a bar that big! i was just curious. i'd do better with a mffler mod so it sounds like the jeep!

BTW, nice pics...looking right at home ;)

I had a 28" on the 390, it bogged a bit but still cut alright the 310s bigger brother, it would be ok with full skip chain marginal with comp. I swapped out to 25" since I run full comp.

Thank you guys! I guess I'll let him run wide open with his 25".

I'm still gonna give him crap for having a bar that big when, A; he doesn't own a fireoplace or stove, and B; has never dropped any wood big enough to justify it.

I honestly think it's a mines bigger than yours thing!

oh well!

I ran a 310 with a 25" bar over the summer. Found I needed to turn the oiler all the way up and not much tension on the chain. Chain was a Stihl 33RSC.

The Stihl shop down the street has 2 brand new 310's on the shelf. One comes equiped with a 20" bar, the other 25".

The service guys there confirmed what I have read on this site: Don't really obey Stihl's recommendations. From what they were telling me, Stihl doesn't even really recommend a non low-kickback chain.

We're both right Lakeside. I said they don't recommend a non low-kickback. That is the same as recommending a low kick-back.

We both win.

stihl versus

on stihl ms 361 max bar 28". as for for the ms 310 max bar believe it or not is a 42" bar:hmm3grin2orange: if you dont believe me check the oregon chain site .

As for the Stihl website, it's worthless in bar selection. It's not based on power. As for the Oregon site, I'd guess it's based on bar mount pattern. They offer a 42" intended for the 066. Coincidently, it's the same mount as the 310....so technically.....it'll fit.

Yup. i hear ya. My feet will fit in Shaq's shoes but I sure as he)) won't wear 'em to a game!

I sure wish stihl would accurately depict what their saws will handle though. They really should be a little more forthcoming...
