Just redid a 262,found not much left on the cyl to do a lot without going wild but managed some grinding here and there..man that saw came out NICE ! snappy and fast and cut well in the wood.. until somebody came in and made me an offer i couldnt refuse :( so it's gone and i'm left with a 266se and a 268.
i see the 266 weighs two lbs more than the 268 but find no hp numbers for both.
considering the weight the 268 looks preferable but i was wondering what is available fom both saws as far as porting goes ?
can either be made to perform like the 262 ?

The 262 is a smaller saw that runs with the big dogs. Just something special about em!

I thought the 266 and 268 were built on the same frame, same as the 272, same weight? I could be wrong though.

I've run a ported 266 and it was strong and fast. Nice saw! But of the three, I'd take a 262. :)

Out of the three i also would take the 262,BUT,like i said,i dont HAVE that choice anymore :(

266,268,272 should have very CLOSE weight being built on same case and frame.Main difference being filter and different air filter setup, intake system but finally pretty close in weight.I would prefer the 272, a Husky classic.

I dont have THAT choice either..

I have a 266se apart right now and to me it looks like it has a lot of room to widen both ports. The skirt was really wide and the ports were both kinda small looking for a 66cc saw. But then again that was to my untrained eye ;) needless to say I opened them up just a lil bit

I don't understand where that difference comes from - it doesn't fit any info I have.

Even if the 266 spec was with some bar and chain, and a metal tank, that is too much.....

My big question, Is the 268 an XP or non-XP?
Both (I have a "non"). I believe the XP has open transfers and mine are closed. (or vice-versa ?)
Now back to the info. Ron is looking for...:D

Maybe throw up some pics ?

Yeah I can't see where the weight difference would be....metal tank of some 266s would add a bit but not a lot. As you found the 262 is a true factory hotrod right out of the box...not a lot of porting can be done as it's already there. The family that the 262 is the big dog of is a much smaller frame saw than the 266..268 etc. Basically a 50cc saw with a very hot 61 cc top end. Nice combo, building one for a friend and trying to get all that's there for him too.

The 266..268..272 and 630 and 670 Jonsered can all be way improved and will run very strong and quick but just is never going to be as nimble as the 262XP. Perhaps even faster in bigger wood and nice saws to boot just not the same though.

If you want more out of your 266.... MM it...port it... open the piston windows...set the squish to 0.020... and find your self a 260A carb. You won't regret it one bit!!!

What I was thinking, 266 and 268 should weigh about the same. I'd take the one that was in the best shape.

The metal tag on the saw only says 268,,but it has an XP top cover on it..
whats the diff ??
Acres site shows two lbs diff.

Now this is wierd !!
checked acres site again..
266 with THIRTEEN in b&c = 15.8 lbs
268 PHO = 13.7
does a 13 in b&c weigh 2 lbs ??

Does the 268 have a 1 or 2 piece coil? I'm sure the 266 is a 2 piece unit. If the 268 is a 1 piece coil I would build it over the 266. Parts are easier to find and the 272xp top end will bolt on and fit under the stock covers. although it is heavier than your old 262xp the 272xp top end on the 268 crankcase will have more hp than a 262 ever thought of.

I am thinking not to far off of 2lbs for the 13" b&c.How much does a 16" b&c weigh?Wish I had a scale to weigh my 13" b&c.I know when looking at a side view of a 268 and 272 from the recoil side they look alike and the 272 is .1 lbs heavyer than the 268.

I havent looked at the coil as it is a running saw..
i got a 371 top end,,will that fit ??
still trying to find what one to work on as a keeper..porting is ok with me.
they both look like crap so cosmetics is not an issue.

your 371 will not fit this series of saw.You should be able to look the coils thru the slots in the recoil cover and see if its 2 piece or not is the coil wire coming from the front of the saw or on the back side of the flywheel?

Ron, i have a complete 268, that i also have a 272 top end for. I've ported both cylinders, the 268 a little more extreme(finger ports, raised exhaust, lowered intake). both p/c's are in great condition. Let me know if you would like to take a look at them.

I have a 262XP and 268XP "Special". Despite the advertised power ratings being very close, the 268XP is stronger in bigger wood. That's about the only advantage of it. It's set at 13,700rpm's no load, 4 stroking nicely. The engine is peaky and "raspy", it isn't as "smooth", and power curve is narrower. It's not nearly as nimble as that 262XP. I believe the politically correct word these days is ergonomic.

In any case, they are both excellent saws, but overall the 262XP is a better saw, IMHO. Both have PLENTY of power and really scream with an 18" bar pulling full chisel 3/8" chains. The 268XP is a tad better with a 20" bar, and I've even had a 24" bar on it a few times and it does OK with it.

I've never ran a standard 268 with the open port jug, but had a 61 for a while, open port, and it was a TURD in comparison to the 262XP or 268XP......Cliff
