My newly rebuilt 281 starts and idles VERY well. About half of the time you give it gas it runs up smoothly and quickly. The other half of the time it falls on its face and unless you get off the throttle it will die.
I just put a new piston and rings in it and didn't touch the fuel line or rebuild the carb. I tached it at 11600 RPM.
Any ideas?

Chris:confused:

carb

I would check the carb. Also check the fuel line for leaks. Either one of those is usually the culprate for that behavior.;)

Put a good used spark plug in it

run it a few minutes and then pull the plug and read it. I am thinking a torn or damaged jug to crank seal possibly?

Just put a new filter and fuel line in her but didn't use a 281 specific fuel line. Need to order one that seals the top of the tank.:bang:

I did just put a 24 in GB Titanium bar on it and she sure is purty.:biggrinbounce2:

And I absolutely love the sound of this thing running.

Oh and when I would squeeze the feul line it would collapse and stick together. I am hoping this was my problem. Thanks for the help and once I get the fuel line sorted out I will probably run it up to about 12000 - 12250 rpm.
