Dealer time!

Sounds like take it to a dealer and get it done properly... was a free saw anyway, and will more than pay for any repairs witht e saving of oil heating when I get it cutting wood!

But what about the sprocket question. should I stay with Spur or change to rim? is it an easy job?

thanks again.

It depends on how worn the sprocket is. I'd change to rim and drum the next time a new sprocket is due - some people prefer to start with a new one when they get new chains.

The gauge of your chains doesn't matter to the sprocket, the pitch do however.......

Well, new bar and chains on order, just waiting on them getting shipped from baileys in the US. the sprocket has a very definitive grove in it. By the looks of the whole saw it has been used and very little maintenance. just hope I can get it back in good condition easily and cheaply. Will see what the dealer says when I take saw in tommorow.

back again.

ok, saw is back from dealer,,, He says piston is scored, probs the cylinder to. whould this cause the saw to start and then die? and would the cylinder be scored if the cylinder and rings are scored?

seems odd that the saw starts, easily I add ( first or second pull) the runs and dies in a few seconds. does this sound more like a leak?

am going to pull the cylinder myself to see once I get a new gasket, but looking for some advise. Dealer was more interested in the price of a new MS 240......:censored:
ok and picked up a 026 pro along the line to.... this site is bad for the bank balance. would love to get this 024 working and sold, but not looking to spend alot of cash.

"Starts and dies" on an 024 is almost aways a seal (usually the flywheel seal). It can also be the fuel filter, fuel hose, impulse hose, blocked carb inlet screen, bad carb (metering diaphragm stiff as a board) etc.. or, see post #17 ;)

You said earlier that the saw had lots of compression. Did the dealer measure it for you?

Pull the top end - 5 minutes - then you'll know what your dealing with.

dealer??

the dealer told me he couldn't get it to start!! I got it home, put plug back in, choke, 2 pulls,, choke off, 2nd pull starts, then dies He didn't test pressure. and was't interested in what I said about saw.... so needless to say no faith there.

Getting longer torx 27 driver over weekend, so will pull the top end. what should I be looking for? Can see wear on the piston and ring from the muffle port( deal found it, but thats where he stopped)

once top end is off, and assuming it is a seal, what next. Another deal to do air test?
