Have a new 3120 for milling. I decided to try and get a tad more poop out of it for the big cuts by modding the muffler. I removed the inner baffler tube and increased slightly the opening behind the screen. I roughly calculate the muffler opening to be slightly smaller in area than the exhaust port area. I also opened the slots in the baffle plate slightly. I notice an increase in exhaust noise level but my "seat of the pants" interpretaion while in the cut does not seem to be discernable from stock. Does anyone have specific details as to weather this seems correct for a otherwise stock saw or do I need to go further on the muffler mods. Not looking to create a monster just would feel better if it could exhale sufficiently to reduce engine temps and increase longevity in a otherwise cruel and punishing application.

Not many 3120s out there

Sure is quite around here..................wwwwhhhhhhhhhhhhwwhwwhhhhhh.... just the wind through the trees.....wwwwhhhhhhhhhhhhhwwwhhhh.....just me and my 3120 and granbergmill in a land desolate of 3120s with a simple muffler mod...wwwhhhhwwwhhhhhhhhhhwwww...lonely, so lonely being the only 3120 owner in cyber space attempting to cajole a 3120 into a happier life...wwwhhhhhwwhhwwwhhhhhhhh....HELLLLLLOOOOOO OUT THERE :eek:

You can open your muffler up to 150% the size of the exhaust port, not that it is going to gain you a lot performance wise. I would install a second outlet with a deflector and go maybe 120%, and keep a spare air filter handy and change it out every four hours.

Doing a search on this site for "muffler mods" gets 265 hits. Reading them you will see the mods recommendations to open up the mufflers on newer saws range from 90 % to 150 % muffler outlet area compared to exhaust port area .Not sure what the big Husky prefers. Also match the muffler and gasket to the exhaust port as sometimes they are slightly misaligned and need a little dressing .Then check and reset carb.

Looked at every thread using a search of "3120 and muffler mod". Nothing specific to my application. Have tried to modestly apply what data was there that seemed reasonable. 90-150 % is a pretty large variable, so I ask for first hand experience on this model saw and modification. Bman

if i was modding asaw like that.. i think it mite be somebody who knows his stuff,that did the work..big saw big money and big potential for trouble,if not done rite..if its gonna be milling,it needs optimum durability.. jmo

So, my 3120 muffler-mod-search led me to this thread and I am wondering if a muffler-mod would help a rev limited 3120xp ? I dropped a 40" oak this morn for a friend and noticed more than anything that the clutch is inadequate with a 3' bar. Is there any chance a muffler-mod could help overcome the stalling of the clutch ? The saw has not been used much so the clutch would be considered by me to be "as new".

Thanks

Albert;
agree, the fixed carb sucks. I hate saws you can't tweek. If you were cutting oak with a 3' bar would you run a 7 or 8 tooth sprocket ?

So for those of us who are not small engine or engine experts at all (cough cough)..... Pictures would be fantastic. I've been trying to follow this thread but I don't understand some of the terminology
