Hey Jeff, good to see you back. The muffler looks really slick, how are you holding the screen in? Russ

Nice job on the Muffler there Jeff. It would be interesting to find out if the original exhaust vent was blocked off, whether it would be faster.

Russ, kinda got tied up with the holidays and had a lot going on at work. Anyhow, what I did was make a "flange" (for lack of better words) out of steel that was about 1/16" thick with 2 bosses (that were 1/8 high) and tapped them. I machined the center of the flange a little larger than the slot I put in the muffler. I put 2 screw clearance holes through the muffler and the screen and I "sandwiched" the screen between the flange and the inside of the muffler. I guess those machinig skills paid off again. I wanted to take a picture of the flange before I mounted it but was in too much of a hurry.
John, I thought the reason for the muffler mods. was to let more exhaust out, why do you think it would cut faster if the stock vent was blocked?

Ken I appreciate the compliment but, I could never have done it without the information and the pictures you "saw builders" post. Now if I could just learn how to do that d@mn internal work :D :D I think I'll stick to the mufflers!!!!

Real nice job! I've done something similar. I use a large flat washer and mill out the slot size that I want, leaving about a 1/4" around the slot. I then made a slot in the muffler the same size. I sandwich the screen between the washer and the screen and mig weld the washer onto the muffler. This works great provided the muffler has enough flat area to do this. I prefer welding only because screws can come loose! I need to get a digital camera to post some of my own pics.

Here's a picture of the "flange" I made for the 345 muffler mod., it's not the best picture but it gives you the idea.

Toneman, the saw hasn't been used much since I did the muffler. The little that I ran the saw myself, I definitlely noticed an improvement...more responsive and a little more power. I would say the work was well worth it !!!!
