I'm curious if anyone has had any problems with the 346xp. I am a tree trimmer for a utility co. and we have outfitted our crews with 335 and 346 saws. we have had to replace the rings on two saws with less than a year on them. I know that you may be thinking fuel mix, that doesn't seem to be the case. any info would be helpful.

Hi Treemite
Could you give us any more info, such as these two saws are two out of four total or two out of a hundred. It`s not a valid excuse but there will be a percentage of any machine model that just doesn`t stack up against the others. Are both of these saws operated by the same person? Could it be a technique problem? When you say that you have had to replace the rings do you mean that the saws had low compression or was there another problem like cylinder scoring? Any more detail you provide will probably be helpful.

The 346 is one lil firecracker, even stock it's a woodticks dream. Go with what Steve says, use 32:1 with the rpm at what the specs say. No rich settings and gut out the muffler. Sharp chain is a must as is all the other sutlties that we have talked about to exhaustion. That lil saw will drive 73LG effortlessly.

Hi
I never had a 346 come in with a worn out ring and I have built between 30-40 PP346s. If they wear the rings out that fast, those saws aren’t worth repairing. Just tell me what you want for the pair.
Since you don’t run the saws yourself, its really hard to tell what kind of abuse the saw gets in a day. Do you have any problems with the 335s?

No. The 346 doesn't have the side plates. The Jonsered 2149,2159,Husky 353,359 used them.
The side plates are designed for use with the new style Air Injection system.Small pipes will be added at a later date and they will be attached to a newly designed turbo. They do have some problems with spark plug failure and also problems with the new 200/1 fuel mix.LOL
I did not have any ignition problem with the 346 yet.The only problem I did have is when they made the change from Walbro to Zama carbs. The first Zamas had some idle and hesitation problems. That is corrected and they now run the same as the Walbro.

Hi Dan,
the saws have very little compression and will not idle after they warm up. There hasn't been any damage to the piston and cylinder, little soft carbon on top of the piston. From what I know about the operators I sure they run them with a dull chain get them hot and then just shut it off.
As far as the 335's go I've never had much luck getting one to run for very long, I just got a cali broke in and I like it, not as much chain speed but more power. What's your opinion on the 335?

The Husky 335 did have its share of problems,I assume that is why they discontinued it.
I have two of the new 338s to port in the next week.I will let you know what they are built like internally.I hope it is an improvement over the 335s.

I'm not sure what it is that you didn't like about the internals of the saw, but we have gone through six in the last four years. we use 91 oct. and good mix oil with tcw3 do you think that it could have something to do with the single ring piston desing? does stihl use this same design in their 020t?

The "tc<b>w</b>" bit might be part of the problem, unless your saws are water cooled.&nbsp; I don't have any preference to recommend other than something formulated for an air cooled engine.

Good point Glen. As for a recommendation, what`s wrong with one of the chainsaw OEM oils? Almost seems like a no brainer, in fact I`m wondering how a utilty ever got started on the tcw3 in the first place? Isn`t this more the domain of the cheapskate or unknowing Harry Homeowner?

The wonderful, awesome 346XP

Yea, go to the ashless 50:1 Husquvarna 2-cycle, or something the hotsaw guys are recommending. The black bottle 50:1 is available at any Husky saw shop, mail order or any Lowe's. I'm in agreement with above. You're using the wrong oil. -TM-

Yea, go to the ashless 50:1 Husquvarna 2-cycle,
Husky oil and aircooled oils in general are not ashless. Ashless actually refers to the additive package which must be a organo mettalic type to work right in a ac two cycle . TCW3 boat will often cause seizures because it lacks the detergency of aircooled oils. As a results ring grooves close in casing the ring to stick and thus scuffing the cylinder(usually on the exhaust side).
