HI. This is my first post in ArboristSite.
I have been reading it for the last two years and get alot of helpful information. So much I talked a friend into buying a MS361 last year. He is a pro logger and uses the saw every day for limbing. The problem he is having is when he takes the filter off to clean it. Alot of wood dust and chips are gathered around the carbs intake. He took it back to the Stihl Dealer and was told that this is the first time he had ever seen this problem. Then was told to clean it up and see if the filter was just loose. Of course it was not and the problem still exist. NO help from dealer. So I am turning to you Pros.
Is anyone having this problem too? If so what did you do.

My thoughts were the same. I took the filter and put it up to the lite and found no holes. and cannot find any type of warp at the seal. Next step going to get a new filter. I was just wondering if anybody has had a problem with the filter bracket. No defects found on this one.

I agree with Jeff, no problems. In fact the best Stihl filter I've ever had on any saw. Something is amiss????. I clean my at the end of the day with a light blast from an air hose and its ready to go the next day. Can you post some pictures, both with the plastic cover on and another with it off. Leaving the air filter in place both times. Then we can all look at it and give you an opinion.

I would like to take pictures But my English pointer pup chewed the cord for the camera. I am going to have my friend get a filter and see what happens. From what I have read the 361 is a great saw. Just can't believe the Dealer was no help. Being under warranty and all. This is why I bought a Jonsered 2171 and now looks like I will buy the 2156 instead of the ms361
I am also sorry to see Sthil has not gone with something to keep sawdust away from the the air intake.
Jonsered calls it. "Turbo air cleaning system".

Dude, don't let this be the reason you don't get the 361. My guess is that something is misaligned somewhere, or that the filter is jacked up. It ain't the saw's fault. The 361 is a superb saw and shouldn't be dismissed because of one lemon filter.

Jeff

I have had 3- 361's and they all let sawdust into the carb area. I found two ways to stop the problem, put grease around the filter lip to seal it, and then buy a 2159 Jonsered. The only 361 I kept is my EHP. No more 361's for me.

West Texas how do you like your 361 EHP?

I think your filter is not laying tight . before buying another filter, whitch may do the same thing. take a filter from your house duct work and cut a strip that fit's around the edge of your filter, a little glue to make sure it stay's in place until you can get it installed. this will tell you if it's not sealing somewhere on the edge. ( If nothing else the glue should catch the sawdust. yuk, yuk.)

On the Jonsered it is identical to my HUsqvarna and it works like a charm. I never need to clean my filter.

Filters :the 361 filter was changed this last October. I don't know why, but MAYBE it helps this situation (which I don't see on mine or others that come in for service). Maybe it's a low temperature problem? The Filter has the same part number, but no longer has the big tabs that protrude down from the bottom. Check with your dealer... and, see the attachment:

I've got a 361, and based on the way the filter seals up next to the saw body, I don't see how anything could get in there, unless it was installed incorrectly, or it's a defective filter with a hole in it somewhere, or the lip is warped.

Jeff
I don't know how it could happen either, unless something is wrong with that particular one.
It does not happen on mine.:)

I cut dry incese cedar all day yesterday and no unusual amount of dust or debris was present. On my 361 its easy to get just a bit of the lip mis-aligned if you get in a hurry. Line it up right and double check.

The TI says that the change is made to adress freezing under winter conditions, and I don't see how it could help solving any leakage problem.

From the drawings in the TI it also looks like it should be relatively easy to modify the original parts to close to the appearance of the new ones - I never understood the reason for the "lips" protruding dowwards from the filter anyway.....

The modification in the TI to assist the carb icing (which can occurs at temperatures higher than freezing) was the removel of a rib under the cover. I was just showing that the filter had been changed. My suggestion about "cold" was separate - plastic/rubber doesn't fit as well in very low temperatures - as found in the Midwest winter, and maybe the extreme cold is a factor in getting a good filter seal, particularly if they are mated when cold. I'm not seeing any problem in the NW.
