I cut down a locust tree Monday and this is what I hit on my very first cut.

IMG_0220.jpg

An old fence had gone through the tree. It messed my chain up so I hit it a few licks with the file because it was the only chain that I have right now. I didn't get all of it filed out and it still cut but not the way it should have. The 18" (at the felling cut) locust still wasn't a match for the 372.

Now to get my chain sharp and find a big tree.

I took the small stuff home in my little truck and went back for the bigger stuff with my other truck.

This has been the best firewood gathering season that I've ever had.

I'm sorry that had to happen on that maiden voyage! But I can feel your pain.
Last year i was cutting up some down wood, and all of a sudden my chain got really dull. I looked into my cut, and only noticed some grey powder, figured it was some kinda fungus on the interior of the tree.
Switched to a semi chisel I had in the truck and within seconds it was dull again.
I rolled the tree over and discovered a concrete plug someone had poured into what used to be a hole in the tree. And I was in the middle of the woods.
Later found out that years ago I was within feet of where an old farmhouse once stood.

How do you like that 372? Love mine!

congrats on the saw

love those fence row's dont forget deer stands, if i know im cuttin one i'll throw on a old chain, i hate ruining a new chain on the first cut

I really like the 372 and it's got to get better. It just feels good to hold. When I resharpen the chain and find a good big tree it'll really tell the tale.

It fired up easily the first time and has started well since.

I can take a messed up chain (they're cheap) as long as I don't hurt the saw.

Congrats on the saw! I've been on a maple splurge this year and most are from yards. I've come to the conclusion if its a yard tree its almost a guarantee there will be metal in it and that I will find it with the saw!

Size Bar!

:chainsaw: I've got a 371 XP with 24" bar. I am looking t a 372XP and a shorter bar, perhaps a 20" or 18". Your thoughts on this based upon your experiences would be appreciated. THANX!

Keep that chain sharp and she will last and last and last and last.
Clean the filter change the plug yearly even though it probably wont
need it maintain it a use the :censored: of it. It likes to be run hard
daylight to dark mine has prolly cut thousands of cords and still cutting
as good as the day it was broke in.

I just got this saw so I'm not the voice of experience. I bought it with a 20" bar and I'll probably cut 90% of my wood with it. I'm going to buy either a 24" or 28" for the big stuff. Probably a 24" but I'm not sure yet.

If I were you I'd probably go with the 20" since you already have a 24". Ropensaddle just made a post on how well he likes his. He could probably give you better information than I could.

Rope, I plan on cutting a lot of wood with this saw but it'll be mainly for my use only so I doubt if I'll ever get those thousand of cords like you have. You never know though, I might like this saw so much that I cut a lot to sell. That is if I can find enough of it.

Looks like I'm not the only one finding metal. I'll have to honestly say that I've never ran into any concrete though.

Chain

Is it 3/8 Pitch, .058 ga ? :chainsaw: If so I'll get a 20" Bar for my 55 Rancher and can use the same chains on both saws. It's all about being flexible

Just remember to store it proper if ya don't use it much or
get out and fire it up and run the fuel out a couple times in winter.
That will keep you from having to put in a carb kit. As far as bar& chains
go I have ran 20 and 24 and 28 on my saw it runs the first two good
stock, the 28 goes on my modded saw. I have never ran a 18 would
prolly cut great:cheers:

my favorite are the trees that grow over rocks and the moss hides them, boy do the sparks fly :jawdrop: and the dust too.:dizzy:

I do have a 3/8 pitch with the .058 ga. I think the 372 is also sold with the .050 ga. chain also. I thought mine was going to come with the .050 which is what I'd rather have since it seems to be more common.

Does the 55 Rancher use the big mount bar? I think the 455 Rancher uses the small mount bar and from what I've read it won't interchange with the 372. I could be wrong though. I've got a 359 that has the same mount as the 455 but I've never tried to see if it'll fit on the 372.

I always run my saws out of gas before storing but starting it up a couple times in the winter would be good for it i'm sure.

You've just answered my question about which other bar to get. I was leaning toward the 24 so I'll get that since it's not likely that I'll mod my saw.

You really like those 372s don't ya. Can't say that I blame you because I like mine too.

That's sucks hitting metal on the first go, but it happens. Great firewood saw and one of my favs. 20" bar is all I need and they'll pull it with authority. I don't have one anymore but wish I did! My Dolmar 120si is too close in performance though and till it quits, I'll keep on keeping on.

Damn husky362 were you watching me about 2 months ago, because that is exactly what I did with a new loop of RSC on my 361. Hit a spike in the middle of the tree that had been used as a deer stand years ago. Knocked one cutter completely off and chipped about 4 others beyond repair.:censored: :censored: :censored: :givebeer: :givebeer:

Most of my cutting will be done with the 20" and if I find a really big tree I'll pull the 24" out. If I need more than the 24" I'll just pass it up. :( I did cut a tree last year with a 359 and a 20" bar that was close to 48" wide where I cut it down. It was hollow on the inside so I got away with it that time.

It seems like the 372 is high on a lot of people's list. That's why I picked this particular saw. :) There were a couple others on my short list but the 372 seemed like it was right for me.

I don't blame ya for keeping the Dolmar until you wear it out. That might be a long time though.

Put a 8 pin on that saw if you are going to run a 20" bar. It will turn it. I run one on my 046 and it really helps the speed. I don;t have a 372 but I guess i am going to have to get one. Everybody talks them up so much. The is a Johnny 2171 for sale local that I could get. If the guy will come down on the price I'll get it and slap a big bore kit in it. Good luck with the saw. My dad and i always cut together. He's the saw sharpener. When I hit something I tap him on the shoulder give him the saw and take his. He gets a break and a chance to smake a cigar and I get to keep cutting.
