It seems that 4-cycle engines are being to pop up in the 2-cycle small engine world. Honda and Stihl have mini four cycle engines. Is the chain saw next for a 4-cycle engine?

While 4 cycles can make a lot of TQ as they can hold the exhaust longer (ATDC) then a 2 cycle, very good idea for string trimmers. There could be an exchange made with larger drive sprockets, but nothing can rev as fast as a 2 cycle, chain responce if some of the fun!

More torque + lower RPM just means higher gearing (ie a 10T rim sprocket) for the same chain speed.

IMHO, the bigger problems are getting the weight down and figuring out how to properly lubricate a 4 stroke engine which is frequently used bucking (horizontal), felling (sideways), and limbing (pointed down).

Excellent piont, you wouldent belive how small some of the new 4 strockers are for A/C , the R/C's have very small 4 cycles , I have no idea how there lube system is set up, but they can run interverted!
IMHO, there is the cost thing, $7 bills can get you a new 046 mag. Its just a guess that that wont get you far in a 4 cyl R/C engine?

Dolmar has a 4 cycle chainsaw they are working on. Last i knew it was turning 12,500 RPM.
