Members or Users?

Do this to get an interesting, to me :), insight

Go to:

Memberlist
Advanced Search
At the bottom of AS page, in Options, change the field to Posts, Descending and 200.

You'll see that JPS is #1 with 6,204 posts then kdhotsaw2 is #200 with 85 posts.

Now, change to Ascending and scroll through how many pages until you get to people who have any more than single digit responses.

At about member 2,600 we get the second post.
At about member 3,000 we get the third post.
At about member 3,200 we get the fourth post
At about member 3,600 we get the twelfth post

This might be looked at like the difference between gross and net.

Not to take anything away from the activity on this site. AS has become a bit like Home Depot or Lowes. Other forums are a bit like the local lumber yard. You get the idea I think. They all provide a need to a different market.

4,000 is a marker, no doubt.

Yeah, Tommy's being snobish about his turf;) :p

There seems to be a general posting trafffic of around 100 people, most for the saw forum. But there is a pretty substansial "lurker" traffic here.

Look at the number of posts/threads

Comercail- 35258/2505
Chainsaw- 57032/4696

There is a lot of hot air in there, but still a substantial thing for 3 years of activity

Snobbish, do really think so :) Not meant to be.

When I look at the stats here and at TB it gives me insights into the profession. This medium is the easiest connection to knowledge that we have at, literally, our finger tips. But its only accessed and used by the tiniest fraction of a fraction of a percentage of the profession.

I wonder if typing is a limiting factor for some people. If we had voice recognition ability, the posts wouldn't come off any worse than Sanborn-ese. We've all been able to figure out what John types, we could get through the typos from voice recognition. That might draw more people into the fray.

i think Tom's analisys, breakdown of numbers to study atrition rate etc. has merit and that if one really needed to be more serious, would trace out/define other patterns and insights. 4000 is a milestone, no doubt!

The lurker traffic is a very sign and point. Also a reminder that we are not just tossing stuff back and forth privately amongst a given group of personalities etc., but on an open forum.

i don't know about all of the voice recognition stuff, nor this junk about "Sanborn-ese. We've all been able to figure out what John types";) though!

I don't post very much but I read nearly everything on these forums except for the whining and hurt feelings chatter. This is one of the best ways to gather info there is and has helped my climbing and general arbo knowledge tremendously.

i just started with this board and i really enjoy it, esspecailly the pics.. I find myself posting probly too much.... but if i asked every question i had you all would throw me off for spamming...lol

It would be neat if a more accurate representation of the active membership was shown in the member's list.

As Tom pointed out earlier, we have a substantial amount of lurker(and I suspect completely inactive) members.

2600 members have only posted twice?

I think a pruning(HA!) of the inactive members would give us a more accurate representation of the membership.

Ya know?

That should be a moderator's responsibility determined by an individuals lack of posting. One site I frequent requires one post monthly or you have to re-join.

That would work here. :)

4,000 is pretty impressive

The fact that we have guys (and gals) piping in from all over the world, I think, is just fantastic. Not only is this site 'open' to all, but newbies are warmly welcomed in and guided.

The members here are a collective, self-policing bunch, not allowing crap, or inaccuracies to go unnoticed. Information and issues are more up-to-the-minute than any trade journal, professional newsletter or field publication anywhere that I know of. And its all free.

All 4,000 of you,.... big round of applause! -TM-

Crap and inaccuracies flows. Come on, I haven't gotten banned! I think that the Journal of Arboriculture kicks this site's butt when it comes to science. That's because there's a different audience.

You can't rely on one source of information for everything. I think everyone should be a member of an online arborist forum, but I think they should also be members of trade orgs and read those materials as well. Attending conferences as well.

I wish we spent more time on deeper topics, but I wish other sites would loosen up a little bit. All-in-all, this is the site I visit the most for a number of reasons. But I would hope that AS would actively work to improve things to get/keep an edge.

Crap flows everywhere

I didn't say there wasn't crap or inaccuracies flowing around; I just said, in my own paraphrase, there's a peer panel who will undoubtedly jump you beans. You can bet on it.

I like the science end of things, too, but the fact that this site doesn't get too sticky with infinite microdetail, it keeps the playing field rather level for everyone. If you want the high-octane science end of things, there's plenty of us who can offer direction there.

Like one of my college professors said (long, long ago), "Its not important that you know all the answers, but rather that you know where to go to get the answers." This site make that possible. -TM-

Start a thread then, I'd like to discuss something besides saddles and tress cords too. I'm just too cold to think of something right now.

The red stain in boxelder was one of my recent favorites.

Maybe a new forum category for the "deeper" things.

Like "THE SCIENTIFIC SIDE OF TREE CARE"

Then there would be an area for those people that understand a greater degree of matters involving cells, chemicals, tissues, etc..

4,000

One thing you can't see is the pm and emails that are sent by members to new guys with questions that are blasted for asking stupid questions. I have walked new guys through a problem with email rather than post the responce. They will come back and lurk but the email questions rather than post. ( thin skin) They learn a lot from lurking and then don't feel they need to post. You are not going to find a better arborsite out there. Lurking can answer a lot of questions before they are asked.
How long were you on this site before you figured out how to use the search option?
