I am looking for a 42'' bar for my 660R. I will be using this setup for yard tree takedowns and the occasional big blowdowns. i dont plan on using this bar much but i want a decent bar that will holdup.

I am not finding many options for a 42'' bar in this mount.

So far i have found Oregon power match (cheapest by far)
Cannon superbar (twice the price of the oregon)
Woodland pro (little more than the cannon)

I have heard that the woodland pro is made by cannon.

I am leaning towards the oregon because it wont get used much and i wont be packing it into the brush BUT i want to be sure it will hold up to some decent use. I would like to run semi-skip 3/8ths square but i might just go full skip. what are your thoughts?

I posted this here rather than the chainsaw section hoping to get opinions from people that have actually used either of these setups.

I bought a Stihl 41" bar for my 088 and its a nice bar.

You're looking for a Stihl bar with a 3003 mount and I've seen them 42" bars on eBay.

Yeah i forgot to add that i priced them through stihl and they were over 200$ with a .404 sprocket so i would have to change out the sprocket thus raising the price even more.

I was looking at a 41" for an 084. New Rollomatic ES for about $95 shipped. Seems like a fair deal. Local dealer wants $65 for a 20" 3/8 set up

Cannon would be my pick. I ran a 41" cannon on a 660 and 395 with full comp. If you're filing I would go full skip.

That's what eBay is for. My 41" bar was $90 shipped.

I will probably go square ground semi skip or full comp.

I like semi skip in that length better than full comp but any of them will work. A 660 will be a little stingy on oil even with the HO oiler.

Dont know if your going to like a 42 if your cutting hardwood might want to think about a 32 have one on my 660 about perfect for the saw in my opinion.

I ran my friends Wildwood Saw ported 660 with a 41/42 " bar on some redwoods a couple of years ago. It was a nice setup and the saw handled the length well. BTW this saw was used every day. I recently sold my 394 with a 42" Oregon to HDBill. That was a sweet setup and stronger than my 660.

the first 42" I got for my 066 back in the early '90s was an Oregon...burned up the tip is the first outing due to lack of oiling.
I then checked around with guys I knew and our local Stihl dealer about the issue. Solution was the Stihl 42 (41") as their tips have much better oiling channels. It worked as promised and I'm on my 2nd now. 404/.063g

That said. I rarely use it now due to the weight difference between it and my .050g 36". Will the saw pull it? absolutely but I'm getting too old for that sucker :p I also haven't cut up anything in the 6' diameter range for several years now.

oh, for either bar get the HO oiler!! makes all the difference in the world.

I've got one of brad's 660's ported with a popup with the stihl 36" ES lite bar in 3/8 063 7 pin rim and it's a good combo. I run it with RSLFK (square ground) skip and it works well. It's used daily. The ES lite bars hold up pretty good, I've just about done the tip on this one but it has lasted nearly a year. I'll replace the tip because the rails are still really good and have needed very little maintenance. I have the high output oiler. The lite bar balances nicely and is worth every penny. It's extremely durable and I love it more than I love my family.

Stepping up to 42" you're probably going to want .404 or you're going to find yourself throwing the chain a lot. You almost want a bar with more belly in at at that size. .404 is going to be harder to pull, which means really you need a bigger saw.

I'd go with at least semi skip, if not full skip. I've used full comp stihl in chisel and semi, and carlton semi skip in full and semi chisel on this saw. I'm not going to tell you your saw can't pull full comp (that's up to you to decide) but I will tell you that there will be just too much chip to clear out with full comp at that bar size. You'll keep bogging down in the cut. Full skip is faster all round.
