42" diameter Poplar log i had milled yesturday

Traded my Amish friend some firewood logs for some mill time. Had this 42" log that the mill couldnt use for veneer because of mineral stains. Thought we were gonna break his Woodmizer LT40 super hydraulic when we put this monster on the table. After we widdled it down enough to quarter saw it, we got about 450 bdft out of it.

I'd say the 'mill' messed up and left ya with some nice lumber! Not sure if I've even seen veneered poplar before?

Scott (mineral stains = awesome) B

I'm guessing that was tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) and not what we call poplars in australia. Her we get a lot of lombardy poplars (Populus nigra) and less commonly eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides) which are both just awful. I've never cut one of either that wasnt rotten and stunk. Can't imagine myself milling either of those species.

Yep, the true poplars are beyond foul smelling.

The Liriodendron is not a true poplar, it is in the Magnolia family.

We used to chip that stinky crap.....what an aroma that was. It would bog that chipper down bad too. All 1050hp of cat V12 just struggling to get it through. It weighed up good though.
