Some time ago I was asked to post a picture of my 500 Kawasaki chain saw. The saw was at my brothers house at the time and I could not do it. My brother came over this weekend, along with Art Martin, and we had a little mini-competition. Of course Art beat us like a drum! He has some good saws and chain. Anyway the 500 wasn't run but it weights 75 pounds and is a bear to handle. There are no anti-vibe features and your hands go to sleep almost immediately. If you can hold it and cut straight it will cut fast. I don't feel it will stand up to Predator but I don't think one man can run Predator either. Take a look at the picture. Mike

Rupedoggy's 500 cc hotsaw

hello mike
Nice photo of your kawi 500. did you get the bombadear 380 cc hotsaw running yet. listen mike, lets make a trade on that old belly bar on your 500, I could use that bar.
ken
ps, looks like that chain on that 500 is almost worn out, maybe we could trade for that also

Nice pic, I have run a 500cc saw and a few 400 and 440 macco's...They are a handful without a doubt. For those of you who have not run one, you really do have hang onto it like you mean it. They are a tough saw to beat with my little 325 Rotax but with a great chain and clean cut even the 500's can be run down (sometimes)...Wish I could have been there with you guys.

OK, this maybe an old thread, but I will take my Rotax Down to California for a private show-down with hotsaws. Art, Ken, John & Mike Rupley. You guys figure out the date/dates that works best for you. The Predator will be along also which means we will need a 26" to 30" Log. And John I hope you have another cut or two left in you, (John did GREAT for his first run with the Predator) Wanna Race???

Seth; Believe it or not that 500 cc saw does not have a compression release. The size of the engine does not dictate the need for a release, the compression ratio does. I start all my big saws with a remote 12 volt starter motor.

Robert; We will be happy to accommodate you. I will be inviting a few friends also. Dennis Cahoon, Jim Taylor, Dennis Harvey will come I am sure. Jimmy the Greek has the odds set at 12:1 for your rotax. BTW the local logging show is Sept. 14,15 in Placerville. Everyone is invited. Come down for that if you can Robert. My brother Jon may be able to board you in his trailer since he is so good at being your predator partner. Mike

Is that all pipe running down the front and under the saw? !

Yes, it is a long pipe because we used the one off the motorcycle and didn't want to change it too much. I also looped it around under the chain and sprocket so if the chain comes off it will hit that instead of hitting the operator. It has done it job at least once and saved my legs/feet. Mike

That was originaly liquid cooled right. Are you using anything in the water jackets to cool the head? Or it doesn't run long enough to need it. Seth

At first I was going to put some anti-freeze in the jacket but then, after it was built, it was so heavy (75#) that I did not want any additional weight. It seems fine without any cooling. It actually cuts for only seconds at a time. None of my really hot chain saws has a cooling fan or anything to aid cooling other than the fins. My Solo almost cooked on two cuts of a 22" log one time. Some of the racers use alcohol to fire their machines. That stuff runs so cool that getting up to temperature is sometimes the problem. Mike

So you were able to bend the pipe without crushing it ?
See alot of 2 stroke bike motors on ebay, that would be a worthy project for one for sure....or a kart:D

Working on my rotax

I am still working on my rotax in between everything else. 700cc bombadier out of my 91 mach Z. the chassis keeps shedding inches via the sawz all to accomodate measuring and determining just how the heck the motor is held in place. I have the water hoses off, and am trying to measure out how to have a block off plate made. I am thinking of having the quick connect couplings in place liek they run at the grass drags. In case i need to run it for tuning or whatever, (or just to make some noise) I can have a ice chest with hoses or a radiator to keep it from burning up. I will try to run the pipes I have now, but I want to turn the 180 so they will blow up and not down. Talked to a guy in Grand rapids today who runs a sharpening shop. He has some loops of old thick chain that might work when I figure out how long, and how I will make a bar. Did did you make your bars, or use something already availabel for another purpose? I already have an invite to visit some friends in San Diego, and they want to see the finished product, so if I go that far and my affinity for wine I am sure I can make it north to show of my latest toy, if the offer is open. Mike your mention of 75lbs is daunting, I will have to put the saw on a diet, or get back on the bowflex. Althought the last project was slightly over 85 and we carried that around no problem- air powered squash launcher- chucked one 175 yards last shot. I will keep snappin pics and hopefully post when I get closer to completion. Any help or insite offered would be greatly accepted! This has some unique characteristics that I know are going to take a couple trial and errors. JB

Fire in the whole!

Those are the general idea behind what we built. You can see the power units some of those pack. Air units for running jack hammers and sprinkler cleaning systems! We use a standard air compressor for home use, a 20 gallon tank, a 6" tube, big gate valve, and about 30 beers before we get started. No explosives (gas lighter fluid hair spray) as we are dangerous enough as it is. When you get to the size those guys have, it is a all consuming life style. Thanks for the site ! JB

Mike did you ever try 404 on this saw.
