Hi
Ok, so I don't make my living running 2 stroke, but I have been reading posts on this forum for a few months, and that kind of makes me an expert, right?

I posted recently that the 5100 is everything people here said it was. But I should have said everything and more. My newset saw cuts great, it has a lot of torq for its size, chips fly and all that, it is smooth with good anti vibe. It has plenty of volume. It is stock, no mods, but it makes my ears ring in a way the other saws don't. I think it is from the high pitched ringing of the clutch. Oh, and I hear the replies coming too! What? What?

I use double ear protection, foam plugs and muffs. What?

Hmm, well thats really wierd, what are your muffs made out of, paper????? I had a fully ported 288xp with ported muffler and it was loud!!! And with wearing muffs it didn't bother my ears at all. Now I have a 394xp with ported muffler and its dam loud too, but I wear muffs. My 345-e can make my ears ring with no muffs. I only wear ear muffs, no ear plugs.

Seems strange to me.

Did you forget to take out your Wisper 2000 or something.

I would try a good quality ear muff,I use a husky helmet right now and it works really well.
I used to run an old timberjack with a Detroit and that thing rang my inner ear to the point it would make me sick to my stomach,no one else was affected like I was.
I had to wear ear protection and I was fine.
everyone's hearing is affected differently.

Thanks for the replies. I use the foam ear plugs on the inside rated at 30dB, and a Stihl helmet with built on muffs rated at 25dB.

With this setup my ears are fine with the husky 372 and the little 338, but that Dolmar seems to punch right through with its high pitched screaming.

Maybe I'll just relegate it to backup saw status.

And to think I sometimes use mine without ear protection.:jawdrop:

Try positioning your muffs so they cover the bone behind your ear its amazing the amount of sound that bone transfers .

Huh - what did you say, I never use hearing protection when running my saws - they doesn't seem that load, as I am an Artilleryman...........:hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange:

I don't hear much anyway, and only what I want to hear........:sucks:

try only using one set of ear plugs. I sometimes have to double up my ear protection inside large generators (semi container sized). Almost all them I am fine with single muff prtotection, but there are a couple that produce ear piercing sounds when I where the plugs and muffs together. But if I just use the muffs, it seems fine. It must be some kind of resonance between the foam plug and the muff housing????Try it, it is worth a shot.

On a side note, the 5100 is one of the few saws I run without any ear prtotection......:D

Also refered to as "Selective Hearing Loss" as opposed to "Can't Hear Sh_t". :D

For some reason I can't hear the pitch of my wifes voice , but I could tell ya who drove up the driveway by the sound of their exhaust on the car.

Your high pitched hearing is what you lose first because its more sensative and easily damaged.
That's why old people can't hear little children as easily as they hear grown men.

;)

If you spend more time at the race track you will become better acclimated.

Although I do recommend protection for the nitro classes. :dizzy:

Only time I where hearing protection at the drags is for the nitro classes...and in the pits at warm ups

At first I was thinking .. how could your ears ring wearing protection like that ... Well, yesterday I took my Stepdads' Pro Mac 700 (slightly modified) out to cut and my ears were ringing for like an hour after using that thing! I've never had that happen before .. Also, I'm an avid shooter (handguns, rifles) and my ears never ring (wearing protection) but for whatever reason that saw made em' ring. Craziness ...

Jack2007... before you further damage your hearing you should box up the saw and send it to me.

I'm deaf... so it don't matter none to me...:hmm3grin2orange:

Gary

You beat me on that one...you should get the saw. I only have bi-lateral high frequency loss.:blob2:

I wear nothing but the best hearing pro, with moldex 6800 plugs and Peltor 10 series muffs. Cause I have issues, and even with all this my ears kind of ring at the end of a long day.

So I am about as sensitive to noise as any person I know. So far, the 5100 does not bother me any more than any other of my saws, and if fact probably bothers me less than any other of my saws. I do hear the clutch ringing and such, but it doesn't bother me.

Just another comparison point.
