I'm really having trouble convincing myself not to buy a real nice 660 with either a 30 or 36 inch bar. I don't always need a bar this long and wondered if the spare bars from my 036 will fit a 660. I meant to ask at the shop but forgot. I get better advice here anyway.

You are going to notice that a bar and chain, just for a say, say an 18" S- Stihl bar and a 66DL (from a 7-pin sprocket) chain will be hard to fit new on an 8 pin drive sprocket,,,,,,, gets better after initial run in (strech)

Thanks, that is good to know. I will probally use a 20 inch 72dl bar most of the time on this saw and I was wondering If I would have to put a 7 pin sprocket on the saw to make it work.

It will work best with a 8 (better chain speed) but either will do. Try Stihl chain - it's "pre-stretched". Some, of the other brands I have to put an extra link in! They must be "pre-shrunk"... :monkey:

Stihl will give you the most service life, but watch out- the cutters are harder which means they're a little more difficult to file and will be harder on files. I run Stihl chain exclusively although I grind everything.:hmm3grin2orange:

I really wish that the 880 took the same bar as other stihls. I have so many bars that having to get another set of bars for an 088 is part of what has stopped me from getting one.

For example, bars for my 395 fit a 3120 but bars for my 066 don't fit the 088.

I assume Stihl had a good reason to use a different bar on the biggie.

I also wish that a bar manufactors would offer choices of dl counts for bars. For example here, Stihl 28 inch bars take 91 dl and Husky 93. I have to have on hand about 9 or ten different sets of loops to cover each of my saw/bars setups. Kind of a pain, and any simplification of that would be great. I probably have around 40 sharpened loops on hand in the shop at any one time, and generally carry about 4 loops each of about 5 sizes minimum when I go out.

Not sure you need a "set"... maybe one or two.. (long - say 41, and real long, say 59). I'm just leaving the "right" size bars on my various saw now and just grabbing the right saw for the job.

If you get an 088 I can make it work with a "standard bar", but I'm staying with the big mount and 0.404

As for carrying all those loops - you'll just have to learn how to hand sharpen those square chains in the field ;)

Actually you are right, I that is probably exactly the two sizes of bar I would run. I am torn between sticking with 3/8 cause that is what my grinder is set up for and what I stock reels of already, or .404 cause it gives me the lower gearing.

In terms of stocking and carrying so many chains, the biggest issue at this point (now that I already have so many) is how to carry them in an organized way. I keep each sharpened chain in a marked baggie, and group them by size in medium sized stuff sacks and then carry that in a canvas bag. What I really would like to find is a canvas flat bottomed toolbag that is already divided into maybe 6 open compartments.

As it is, sometimes on site I am fishing through my bag of chains to find the right size. Anyone that has visited me knows organization is not one of my strengths. (Assuming I have any, of course.)
