Has anyone demoed one of the new 90's with the 40hp Kohler? If you have would you share your thoughts?

I ran a Morbark Eager Beaver for a long time I would think it's about that same size as a 90. It had a 4 cylinder ford gasser in it. It was a cheap, simple and reliable chipper and would eat 6" hardwood all day.

Price point is great on these ($22k). Were looking at about $6k more to put a 49hp CAT in it. I like the idea of being able to service the Kohler without special tools or knowledge. Plus parts would be half the cost of the CAT.

Also got a quote on a gasser 990xp. Engines are Tier 4 final so thats pretty appealing, about $12K more out the door but it might be worth it. I just don't know if we need another 12".

probably a better deal unless you want to deal with wood over 6", yeah, I know it should be 9",,but it ain't,
Jeff :)

This is going to be with a pruning crew so I think it can hang. I'm gonna get it out on a demo next month, then we'll know for sure.

My 90xp has 37 hp wisconsin and I didn't think it would have the power but it does pretty well. Getting parts are real cheap and your small engine guy can work on that Kohler. Mine wouldn't start one day took it to small engine shop he got it fixed and running for under 200$. That was a relief used to mechanic stops starting at 500$.

The beauty of the Kohler is you can replace the whole thing for about $2500 and will only take you a hour or two.
The Cat would be a lot more and frankly I am not impressed with them. I have seen far too many of those small
Perkins/Cat replaced in low hour machines. If you can do without the power, go for the Kohler. The 90 will chip 9" just
not fast and it takes some finagling to get it started.
