I recently bought the above truck to haul wood and i think i have a fuel pump going out. The truck is a gasser with the 5.8 and it ran fine on the front tank for the first couple of days and now it spits and sputters and won't stay running. I is running fine on the rear tank and i am wondering is the pumps are the same for the front and rear tank?

The fuel gauge is also stuck on full for the front tank, and stuck on 1/4 for the rear tank, any ideas on how to fix this?

I have changed the fuel filter already.

Thanks

Scott

Make sure You have fuel in that front tank, I believe each tank has it's own pump, and a screen inline with the pump inside of the tank. I would drop the tank if it has the trouble with good fuel in it, and pull the pump and screen assembly out if the screen is restricting the flow clean out both it and the tank, and put it back together, and try it again, you might also check the fuel pressure at the the injection rail when you are running on that tank. You will probably need Ford fuel line quick connect tools to take the lines loose.

fuel gauges

I have had alot of fords they never had very dependable, accurrate fuel gauges, the trouble with bad readings likely lies with the floats inside the tank, or possibly the sending units.

I had an '88 f350 that acted like that. Would not run on the front tank, even though the pump worked, the filter was fresh, and it was full of fuel. Turned out to be the tank selector valve down on the frame.

Thanks for the replies guys. The front tank does have fuel. The truck has a flat bed dump on it so i can access the pumps without dropping the tank. If i pull out the fuel pump is there a way to test it?

spacemule brings up a good point. Since the tanks are easy to get to I would check the screen and pump first, another way if feasable would be to go to the selctor valve and see if You can swap the front and rear incoming fuel lines, if it runs good back position from the front tank, and spits when you change to front position now the back tank replace that selector valve.
