A cheap ms170... what could go wrong!

Don’t bother with a 7t…not enough power. These saws do very well with a basic muffler mod…holes drilled out behind the screen.
I’ve had a 16” buried in a 30” pine log with no issues. Just let the saw pull its own way and it won’t bog.
After the 10th one completely stripped down you get pretty good at it, lol

Can anyone tell me the point of the oringed tube that sticks out the top of the carb that goes into the top of the airfilter and what it does?

If I bunged that hole and made my own airfilter will the saw still run fine?
It's got the impulse pipe built into the inlet and the carb has the hole for it so I'm at a loss of its use.

Many thanks

Just a breather for the carb diaphragm, I believe. I wouldn’t mess with it.

Thanks for the replies, I'll perhaps try it bunged and then vented. I'm trying to fix the terrible air filter system, I can already see fine dust inside the inlet after one section so my intention is to fit a 25mm crankcase type filter onto the top of the right angled plastic inlet.

I know it's a cheap saw, just want to make it last as well as I can which means fitting a filter that works.

That vent has nothing to do with the filter system. A better filter material would certainly help. The stock ones aren't great but some of the AM are really bad.
