What are the capabilties fo the husq. 55 rancher, and the 136. Im just curious to know. My FD bought these a while back and im kinda wondering why. They arent used for firefighting, mostly just tree removal during storms, but they seem to lack power for even that. (especially the 136). Im just curious to all of your thoughts on these. Thanks!!

Your local fire department bought those, hmmmmmmmm. Thats alittle unusal. Is your fire department a big outfit or a small local one???

I agree, but the Doc may disagree thet the 55 is a bad saw (it really isn't imo either - just an old design, about like the MS260).

I just don't understand what is has to do in a fire departments inventory......

The 136 may be OK for pruning the roses, about as the MS180......

Sorry Troll, and Doc, the 55 is not a bad saw, for what it is. But I would be hard pressed to see a fire department ewuiped with that for their "large saw", I would like to think they would show up with no less than a 440 with a 25" on it!!! If they come to rescue me, I want out, not have to wait another half hour for them to whittle the tree out!!

I ask about the fire department itself because around here they buy nothing but Stihl and all Pro models. Money is of no issue. They tell me they want the very best available on their trucks at all times. Thats why I found it odd his fire department seems to be less picky about what they use. Not saying Stihl is better but that I would think they would be buying Husky Pro saws wanting the best Husky has to offer.

I didn't say the 55 was bad - just an outdated design, like the MS260......

A 136 for a fire department seems kind of silly. Maybe they kept something that was supposed to be raffled off in a fund raiser.

Around here a town or fire departments "small" saw is something like the 55 rancher mentioned or a 353/2152. Their "big" saw is something like a 372 or Dolmar 7300.

Rancher 55?Fire Department.

Let me say that my 55 Rancher is one well cutting saw.As to the fire department, it would have to vary depending upon your local. Here in Texas we have a 025 that still has the paint on the bar.It has a 14 inch BC. Has anyone ever tried to run a saw with full fire gear on?It is truly a challenge. The gloves are well insulated, the bunker pants and coat are heavy. But back to the issue, a smaller saw is less expensive, and easier to manage being a lighter weight.Starting a smaller saw is also easier on the less experienced fire man.The 136 is good for small trimming but not for fire department requirements.

I didnt undestand this either. These saws are the smallest that we have. (considerably smaller than the saws we use to cut roofs, walls, doors, etc. Like I said they are only really used for tree removal, but they only seem to be useful on small branches. Anyhow I plan on having them replaced, and wanted to make sure I talked to the people with experience, and knowledge on all of this stuff before I went and tried to justify buying new saws. I think the biggest problem with having saws like these is that they have a limited use, when we should have bought a saw capable of not only cutting trees, but also roofs, metal roofing, etc. Thanks for the input guys, and if anyone has any suggestions for replacements I would appreciate it. (BY the way im a big stihl fan compared to husky so I would really like some input on replacing them with stihl saws). Thanks again

I believe any department not equiped with a 460 rescue, or equivelant, is under prepared!! I live in a town of 1200 and we have at least three, they like spending money!! But at least one of those types of saws, and three others, two bg and one medium.
Yes, I understand they are heavy and firefighters are overladden to start with, but they live for this!!! I really can't imagine showing up to resuce some one, or needing o clear the streets, and all I had was a 55, gonna be a long night!!!!
A 260 for the small medium, or better yet a 361? and the minimum large saw a 440/372/7900 with a 24".
Andy

Please do a search on this, neither are very well respected saws.

You my friend, are without a doubt, A douchebag!!!!!

Seriously Andy, you need to run one before yapping about them. The husky 50,51 55 series are about the best value in the mid 50cc saw class money. Too bad they have been discontinued..

It has more snot than your 350, alot more, and a ton of torque that will go with it...Many tree companys use them for the ground guys becuase they have more power than many other similar sized saws, and they will run a dull chain (cheaply paid gound guys) lol

It has a alot of the same features as the 261/262 series saws that you love so much, just a tad smaller bore and a little less weight. In all seriousness, I think you would be much more happier with a muffler modded 55 than your 346 setup.

Now back to the thread!!!!

Fire dept... It is a great saw with the power to run 3/8 chain up to 18-20" range, but for hardcore fire use, I would think the budjet would be a little more for a bigger saw.

I had already appoligized earlier!!!!! I have nothing bad to say about the 55, I boned that, had 455 stuck on the brain:jester:

But either way, it's not a saw for a fire dept!!!!

Admited douchebag

Sorry...

Yup, the 455 is a whole nother ball game. Too bad it wasn't an improved chassis design of the tried and true 55...A spring type suspension on the ole 55 wouldn't be too shabby!

Sure!!! That would be cool!!! I don't have anything bad to say about Efco either, just hard to find parts in some areas! (like mine)
I think you know what I am talking about manual, that size saw is fine for small stuff, but if they come out to save me, I hope they have something big enough to do the job and not expect to use my saws when they get here :greenchainsaw:

No need to explain Andrew for your right. The fire companies around here all use 460's, 440's and 361's. They also use TS400 cut saws and 460 Rescue saws. I know all that for a fact because they buy them from dear ole me. They're thinking is don't bring a knife to a gun fight.
