I recently posted a link to an on-line tree identification website; a lot of people seemed to appreciate the reference, so here is another favorite of mine: Missouri Botanical Gardens.
You can tell the website dozens of different parameters, and it will tell you what plants you should consider. Then it lists the individual characteristics of the plant you select, and usually has some pretty good photographs. I use it more than almost any other website. (Sometimes it is a little bit slow)
