Certainly, only a portion of you will be doing business in Oregon, although frequently tree services move into Oregon from many other states.
This may be of interest for your own location even if not in Oregon.
Oregon is fairly regulated. There is a Construction Contractors Board here for building trades. This happens to be where the TREE PRUNING services decided to place themselves for license, bond and insurance.
That board, the CCB, does no industry related testing, and licenses tree services for pruning, removals and stump grinding.
Oregon also has a Landscape Contractors Board that licenses landscape contracting. This board, the LCB, requires 2 years experience and has extensive industry related testing - currently only 1 in 10 people pass the exam first time.
Last year, several Oregon tree services were fined for advertising "PLANTING." That is a landscape contracting term that the CCB license does not cover. A LCB license is needed to advertise planting, which is landscape installation.
Several (likely all) of the fined tree service owners were ISA Certified Arborists. That does not matter in Oregon. ISA Certification is not a credential in Oregon to legally advertise tree planting.
Certainly Certified Arborists will make excellent tree planting people. But law is law.
Also, landscape contractors in Oregon can prune and remove trees with their license. Its the higher caliber license.
Should you be in Oregon, or coming here, be careful about your advertising for "planting."
Several tree services in Oregon have decided to shoot for the LCB license because it offers so much room for advertising terms and work categories. It also is a strong credential, especially if you have an ISA certification or Forestry degree to add it too.
Currently, the local Pacific NW Chapter ISA President, and the Landscape Contractors Board of Oregon, are discussing moving tree services from the CCB to the LCB to get the entire green industry of Oregon working together under one board - combining talents of landscape and tree trades to maximize the quality of horticulture offered to Oregonians.
