I seen a 24 inch stihl bar on fleabay, and said ok I will get that for my 038 magnum. So I bought It ,never thinking it might be a 404 bar and not 3/8. So it came this morning in the post, opened it ,and you guessed it , its a 404.:angry2:
It has a removable sprocket tip on it, so can I just get a 3/8 sprocket for it?
I noticed that the bar mount looks bigger than my own bars.
So what should I do ?
1..Cut my losses and forget about it
2.. change the sprocket tip to 3/8
3.. buy a new chainsaw to fit the bar {I like this one}

If its number 3, which saw should I get

Any help, always appreciated

Put another tip on it, as long as you are running .063 chain. Make sure the thing actually fits your saw first, before you spend the money. Sometimes bars are misidentified on ebay since the seller is clueless and is just selling a "widget".

I vote #3 say maybe a MS460 or MS660, man it's so easy to spend other people's money. :D

You can change the tip but be aware that the .404 is .63 gauge so if you change the tip to 3/8 you will need to run the 36RS/RM chain.

What is the part number on the bar if it starts with 3002 it is a large mount bar i.e. 075, 084, 088 etc. what you need is a 3003 bar for that saw.

Wait on second thought I vote option #1, send it to me and I'll through it out for you. :biggrinbounce2:

Hi Erick .Thanks for the help. Yes it says 3002 on the bar .What does this mean?

It's a large mount bar for an 088, 084, 075, MS880 etc. and will not fit on your 038. The slot in the end of the bar for the studs is wider than the studs on your saw.

If you want a 24" 3/8 pitch .50gauge bar for your 038 you will need part# 3003 000 8830 (small tip) or 3003 000 9630 (large tip)

If option #3 is stihl on the table I think everyone should own a "Big" saw at least once in their life. :laugh: j/k

OK thanks for your help. Just one more question then . I see some threads on free firewood. Do you think I should start a thread on,
Free stihl MS 880 lol :jawdrop:
