Am I chasing weak clutch springs?

I have a Ms460, fairly used that wont idle.

It would appear to have been something that has been a while coming. It seemed to idle fine when I first recieved the saw. But the problem, which I assumed was bad tuning seems to be getting worse.

I spent some time tonight having a check with things, and I find that its tuned fairly well ( at least I think). I have it to the point now where it seems to idle fine with the chain brake on, but I snapped it off... the saw idled up (had to turn the idle up a bit) and then when the clutch engaged, it slowed the saw down until it died.

So now it idles fine (so it seems, It got dark on me) with the brake on, but once released the chain spins until the motor dies...

Doubt it.. if it idles fine with the brake on, but doesn't when off... Hmmm... Might be an air leak...

Does it get higher pitched and "thin" (lean) before it quits?

No, it slows down and chugs...

if I blip the throttle too hard it bogs and dies. I have to give it a small blip to restore the idle then give it throttle to cut.

ahh, its running too rich i bet since it bogs down with too fast blipping...

If manifold or crank seals leaking, saws usually cutting like a dog, if running fine when cutting it shouldn't be the carb fuel screen either, sounds like the clutch and/or springs are buggered anyway, possibly blocked fuel breather or crumbly fuel filter, causes 'rich one minute lean the next' symptoms, the idle always fizzles out, mismatch of Hi Lo Idle likely tryin' to tune to dodgy settings, and setting screws back to stock position still does nothing, set the idle screw completely off, butterfly closed, try to get an idle with just Lo & Hi, then go from there but seems strange the saw idles fine with the brake on. Clutch sounds dodgy all the same.

Just do something simple first. Take off the bar and chain, turn the
sprocket by hand, see if it turns ok. Then remove the drum and bearing and
remove any dirt or fiber wrapped around the shaft. Inspect the clutch and springs as well.
If bearing looks ok, put a dab of grease on it and reinstall the sprocket
drum etc. Start the saw, see if it does anything different.

Good Post Fish,,,, tried to rep you for your common sense approach but I'm toast,,,,

Yeah very likely there's shreds of string/nylon/vines or suchlike packed tight on the clutch bearing shaft
