So I been tinkering with a husky 61 I picked up a few months back. Ended up putting a jred 630 top end on it with a HS224 carb and non baffled muffler. I wanted to keep it 61cc but also perform well hence the closed port 630 cylinder. Anyway I had a hard time finding a good piston for it but eventually found a NOS 630 piston. As you can see, there were changes made to the windows (and rings) over the years. Two ring piston has the biggest windows, single ring piston (last pic) has slightly smaller windows, and NOS piston has the smallest windows. I figured the new piston may not perform as well as the others because of the smaller windows. Turns out I was wrong. Had to open the high speed an 1/8th turn or so to get it to not rev to the moon. Also had to adjust the low speed a touch. It appears they were able to improve the flow through the smaller windows, or so it would seem. Better velocity into the lower transfers? Still thinking on it.

How do the piston windows line up with the transfers?
If the one with bigger windows was a touch wider than the transfers it would be worse than the windows being too small flow wise.

The small window piston matches up to the lower transfers better than the other two. I think that definitely helps to improve the flow. I’m also thinking the velocity through the windows is better as well.

The 266xp are really getting tough to find in any condition. I have a Strong one that is all stock and She Rips!! I absolutely Love that old girl!

I had recently seen a beautiful showroom condition 80s 266xp close to me for sale not long ago, if I had the money I’d have grabbed it , but it was immaculate, not a scratch anywhere, perfect plastics and stickers all still intact , the guy wanted $450 but I just couldn’t justify it at the time just having picked up the 61

Lol. Last year I purchased a mint condition 1989 (300th anniversary) factory full wrap 266XP for $450 dollars. Came with a near new 28” Oregon power match bar and six chains four of which were new. Guy I got it from works at a local lumber mill, he was the second owner. I tore it down, cleaned everything, and replaced all the normal things you’d replace on one of these saws. Believe it or not, these are the before pictures. It’s never thrown a chain.

Very clean, nice looking motosierra! I was trying to find out what year they made the chain brake standard and if they had any years [in the 80's] where CB was optional. I know back then many chose to not use their brakes thinking it was just extra weight and slowed the chain down in rpms...Anyone know when that might have been?

I know up here brakes were part of the first CSA standard in 1977. I am not sure of all the details though, as I have found later full wrap saws without. Not about to spend $125 to buy the book and find out either...
What I can tell you is the non brake cover only shows up in the 1981-09 266 IPL, and is gone in the 1982-12 one.
