And here we argue about 35:1 vs. 50:1...

I know in some Scandinavian countries (maybe others, too) you are required to have a license of some sort in order to operate/purchase a chainsaw.

I've never been a fan of that type of regulation...at some point the government just can't save you from yourself. Things like a drivers license are different, where the potential to hurt others is the greatest concern.

But type the word 'chainsaw' into the YouTube search field and see what you come up with. Guys standing behind their saws, cutting unnecessarily with the tips, walking and stepping over things while they're revving, no PPE, half-throttling, etc. That's just the safety part...I'm not even talking about the guys sanding logs in half with dull chains, using poorly tuned saws, etc.

I don't want to start a holy war about saw regulations, but what if we just required an IQ test here in the States? Afterall, we could justify it based on the cost to society to retrain these idiots after they cut their legs off...

Nope, too narrowly focused. How about an IQ test for breeding. That would address a far broader array of societal shortcomings. :D

More seriously, I think that we all need to make a point of exhibiting proper technique, proper use of safety gear, etc. each and every time we cut. I know that in the time that I've been here at AS I've finally upgraded to proper PPE because the positive social pressure to do so was finally stronger than the "yeah, but" reasons that had kept me from investing in the right gear up to that point. And since I have done this, other people I cut with have started doing the same, and so on and so on. Setting a good example is perhaps the strongest tool for improving people's behavior.

Uh oh....do I have that wrong? As I recall, one of the other posters commented on the neccesity of a license. Maybe it's another EU country outside of Scandinavia? Or, quite possibly, I'm wrong completely?

I just found this thread (http://new.arboristsite.com/showthread.php?t=20296&highlight=safety+license), apparently Australia has some regs like that, and Sweden as well, although the Swedish regs appear to relate to being a logger, not just running a chainsaw.

In this part of Florida, anybody over 16 years of age with $15 can get a drivers license. For my wife's friends in Germany, its quite another story. Rigorous training and classes and the test is fairly difficult as well from what I've heard. It never ceases to amaze me how poorly people drive here and the lax requirements for getting a license is a part of the reason in my opinion. I think insurance companies are somehow in cahoots with this as well!

i think its germany where you need a liscence to have a chainsaw. as for in america no chainsaw regulation, easy drivers tests. somehow were all still alive. people arnt bad drivers because they dont know how to drive theyre bad drivers because they want to be, people arnt morons with a chainsaw because they dont knwo how to use a chain saw, they just dont care, peopel smoke even though they know its bad for them. freedom includes the freedom to be an idiot. im not going to get my panties in a twist over what someone on youtube does with their chainsaw...

In the UK if you are in the arb. business it is virtually impossible to get business insurance if you do not have your 'tickets', because if there is an accident or incident the Health and Safety people will be on you and the insurance company like... but a homeowner can still buy a saw.
Also to buy a top handle you are supposed to show your climbing and chainsaw from rope and harness tickets, apparently a homeowner cannot buy top handles just like that.
