Large crack in old tree

I just noticed this large crack in my tree and I’m trying to figure out what to do?

That's pretty bad damage. I'd consider removing it.

Is it threatening any structures? I agree, that's pretty bad damage, on the other hand, hackberrys are tough old birds. If it isn't threatening anything, I'd just let it be. If you are asking if there's anything you can do about it, just let it be.

Would it be possible to have an arborist cable it for support to keep it from splitting more?

Included bark, this was always going to fail at some point, something to be aware of. An otherwise nice tree, I would pollard and try and save it!

I agree.

It may have another 50 years or more of life left pollard.

If the entire tree fell, I would say maybe (I’ll try to get better measurements). But I’d just the split part fell, probably not (I don’t know how these things usually go).
Would there be any benefit it removing the “less secure” looking half of the break?

Ah! I had to look up what pollarding is… that is a good idea to try. I will try to find a local arborist (or someone less afraid of heights than myself )
