This morning Treemandan and I pruned a pretty good sized oak tree. We set up an SRT nice and high on a strong limb. After some instruction on the Pantin and hand ascender, I went right up. Felt like I picked-up ascending on an SRT very quickly, although of course the rope came out of the Pantin several times.

Changed over to DRT and came down a bit to begin working. I felt very confident walking on the limbs. There was, to be expected, a lot of greenhorn awkwardness when trying to swing around and establish perfect body position for the cuts, which by the way all went very smooth. We did decide however that the 192 T just doesn't have the balls needed for decisive in-tree work. Maybe I'll upgrade to a 200T someday.

The DanBen (TM) sent me up a prussic that he had dipped in a bucket of sap last night. That was a pain but I made it work.

As always, DanBen's instruction was extremely helpful and there were NO details left out. I really felt a lot better and confident (but not cocky) when my feet hit the ground.

Took several face-fulls of poison ivy along the way, tomorrow morning might be...interesting.

Thanks Ben, awesome day!

So plas, for those silent watchers who are thinking of giving this game a try. Is it easier to learn from a book or from doing the work under tutelage?

You can read all the books and forums you want but in the end you NEED field training with a pro. Period.
