I picked up a $7 Blue Homelite Super XL Auto last weekend. To my surprise, even though the muffler, bar, and chain were rusted to nothing, I cleaned the little saw up and it runs great.

Now I need a muffler. I have seen three styles. The one on this saw has 3 slotted openings on the outer cover which is held on by two screws (and a third inside the muffler body). I have also seen them with one opening and three screws on the outer cover, and a third style with a three screw outer cover and sort of a heat shield over the opening on the outer cover.

I hope all this makes sense.

Is one style better than the others?

Thanks,
Phillip

Pics or it didn't happen...

Okay, here they are.

Decided to use an old Super EZ Auto Muffler as the starting point. Of course, that muffler has too small a port, mounting holes aren't spread wide enough, and it needed more depth to the muffler.

Here's the saw with the old bar and muffler

Here's one showing the gap between the jug and the stock SEZAO muffler:

Disassembled the old SXLAO Muffler and cut the mounting/port portion off it use as a template:

Here you can see the "template" next to the SEZAO muffler with a tracing to show me what metal I need to mill out of the SEZAO muffler:

I milled an adapter/spacer plate out of 8ga mild steel and welded it onto the SEZAO muffler...but I forgot to take a picture of that...dang it.

Cut the outside guard/baffle off the SEZAO muffler and found that it actually had enough holes at a large enough size to equal about 100% of the exhaust port. Mounted it up to the saw and it fit like a glove.

Here's the saw with it's new muffler after cutting some wood. Also has a new bar (Thanks to ModifiedMark!!) Running great. It's about as loud as it can be, but after richening it up a bit, it is 4-stroking as it should.
