I am getting a nice collection of dull handsaws. I use them alot and after about 30 days or so I have to replace them again. I was getting only a week or so tell I switched to silkys. This includes pole pruner blades too. Any way many years ago I use to sharping handsaw blades with a file, but these new sawblades with several grinds on each tooth are a whole different ballgame. I was thinking of useing a 1in belt sander on them. Any suggestions? (yes, I do have to much time on my hands, lately.)

Dirt is hard to cut, you do not have a chance with a 1'' belt. How much is your time worth? Blades are cheap.

I used to sharpen the old ones too. The Boss paid me like 12 bucks a blade to do it. I don't think I have the time to try on the new blades but at 30 bucks a pop? Also cleaning the gum from the sides makes a noticaable difference.

Most, but not all of the Silky and Samurai lines of saws are impulse hardened, so they can't be filed by hand. The proper file for non hardened blades, like the Fanno, and some pole saw blades is called a feather file. I had one and used it for a while on pole saw blades. It was hard to do a good job.

Sent some out to a guy, years ago, for $5 a pop. He only sharpened the tiny tip edge, so that wasn't really worth it.

Sharping Hand saws

I do it , the Feather File from Sherrill works fine on the non hardened saws. I used to do Polesaw bades at night waching TV half hour or so. Makes them as good as new as long as they are the Razor tooth saws( Fanno, ARS & the like)

i sharpened my silky ibuki with a flat file from craftsman...it wore out the filer pretty good but it was super sharp..you dont really realize what your missing out on until you sharpen it...plus it's only one side..but many edges on each tooth(3?) i accidently shapened it into a needle tooth instead of a 45 tanto or wahtever but i think it was sharper..but dulled more quickly...it makes it worth it to sharpen your own stuff because it feels good when your at work...being on top of things..unless you #### it up but thats how you learn...
