The funny thing about Stihl is they probly already have though we know nothing about it. Alot goes into design, research and testing before word of the product ever leaves the building. Also not every new design goes into production so its anyones guess what they got going on. Rest assured though they always got something going on. With new EPA standards coming no doult new models are coming to meet those standards...

When I was at the NE headquarters a couple of months ago they said that by 2009 ALL saws in the lineup will be stratofied engines. The first one to be start charged after the 441 will be the 280 I believe. Could have gotten that mixed up thoguh. They said that the big pro saws will be last though.

441

I placed a call to North East Stihl late last summer. Seems the 441 was already being sold and the techs there hadn't even run one.
Funny they'' Sthil'' say new for this year on Stihls sold in Canada! Finally I saw one! Count on a year later than the U.S up here! But I would rather Run a Jonsered any way! Looking to trade my like new 044 with heated handles for a 2171 with full wrap

we were told by mid atlantic stihl that the 460 would be replaced next year as the 461

If the 2009 EPA rules are really what is driving the new models it seems like Stihl is way behind. Do 2009 models show up in late 2008 like cars? It seems like we should be seeing a least a couple new models this year and a bunch next year? I asked my dealer and he told me only the 441 passes the 2009 specs.

I wouldn't say that Stihl is way behind......if anything they are prolly the most ready. By ready I mean models that we don't know of!!!

I agree with you, they will have models ready that are probably going through the end of their testing phase and will be out soon.

Chainsaws are sure different from the 6mo product cycle of the IT industry :dizzy:
Stihl has the 441, which IMO is a good base to start with. If all the new models are as good as the 441 Stihl will be in great shape. That said, I'll probably pick up one of the Husky 372's in a few days. :)

Stihl is way ahead and have been for a long time. EPA gives the whole product line a rating it has to meet. Meaning they don't go by each model product. Stihl came out with the 4-mix trimmer, the 4-mix blowers and the 441 in order to to keep some of the so called dirty models that as of now will not pass. Those models don't have to pass to meet the rating for the rating is met with all the clean burning 4-mix trimmers, blowers and now the 441. Its the overall product line that has to meet EPA, not each model. The dirty running saws like the 880,660,460 have survived thanks to all the other clean running models in the line up, be saw, trimmer or blower, they all count toward the rating set by EPA. As standards get higher and higher no doult those saws will go but will be last to go. I think Stihl right now has come out with a computer fed carb on the MS280 to clean that model up. That should be a ball to work on, grrrrrrrrrrrrr, so much for the good ole days.

I talked to a Stihl Rep at the Eastern Outdoor Sport Show last month. He told me the 441 had been tested for 3 years before it hit the production floor to be sold to the masses.

I can believe that. A awful lot goes on that the public never sees. One thing is for certain, all the companies are behind the scenes in labs doing research and building new designs as we speak. They never sit idle.

Good info Thall - thanks! I'll try to rep you, you know how that goes.

If Microsoft ever sold a chainsaw it would arrive DOA. MS would then send out a bag of parts every month until finally "Service Pack 1" would be released. Yup, a big box of parts you have to install. At that point the saw would run but be low on power. Parts would still arrive every month until "Service Pack 2" arrived in a box bigger than what the original saw arrived in. Once "Service Pack 2" is installed the saw is usable and makes decent power, at which point MS will stop selling the old saw and replace it with a shiny new saw that doesn't run. I think I like Stihl's method better!

In the other parts of their product line the BR340 blower and FS80/80R trimmers are going away at some point this year. (thank god we have 40 of the 80R's in stock for the spring rush). With the MS280, I think i ought to look and see if the ones we just got in recently have the new carb. The electronics are powered off the coil right?

Yep... but the "coil" is the electronics... 4 pole flywheel is the give away.. 2 poles for ignition, 2 for power..

The BR340 already gone from around here, but they reduced the price of the 380 to $379.
