Make that a 46 dressed up... Serial number says it's REGISTERED as a 460, but that's meanless on a saw with a 139xxxxxxx serial number.

Caps

Then the crankcase is from an older 046. Around 1997/early 1998

Lake,
Weren't all the 0xx series using the screw on caps like the 044/046, then when they went to the MS440/460 they went to those mechanical caps right??? I think that was one of the differences was tank caps beside the decomp valves... I don't see a decomp valve on it either though. That kinda makes me wonder about that serial number. I called Stihl and they told me where/when it was sold and what model. Something doesn't add up on it though... I think it was parted together with an older saw...

Out of curiouisty is there some kind of Stihl national database to find out where the saws were sold and the purchace date?

Yes, except for the MS660 (hasn't gone to flip caps yet ) and the MS880 (went to flip caps only last year I think).

Decomp isn't a good indicator - They were made both ways.

Dealere have access to a registration database, but if the saws wasn't registered, nothing shows. Stihl knows when a saws was made and who it was sold too, but a dealer has to call to find out.

If you are the owner, then you can email Stihl and maybe they'll get back to you with more info.

That saw is like most on E-bay, somebody's pieced together piece of junk they want to be rid of. E-bay is saw heaven for crooks and nitemares for buyers..
