Hello, folks,

I'd like to replace the spur sprocket on my MS-291 with a rim sprocket. The "Lil' Red Barn" in VA lists a Performance Saw Supply rim sprocket on Ebay for:

"NEW 3/8" 7 TOOTH DRIVE PRO 2 PIECE DRIVE SPROCKET FITS STIHL MS260, MS270, MS280, MS271, MS291 WITH ADJUSTABLE OIL PUMP"

I do have a 3/8" gauge bar and chain on this saw, but the oil pump on my saw is not adjustable, at least not that I have ever found. Does the type of oil pump affect the sprocket type on a 291? I assume both types of pumps are sprocket-driven. Lil' Red Barn has not replied to my email inquiry, and oddly enough Power Saw Supply does not list this particular sprocket on their website.

Would this sprocket work on my non-adjustable-pump saw, or do you have suggestions for an aftermarket one that would? This one is about $20.

Thanks for any insight or suggestions!

See if it is compatible 1141 640 2001. Stihl shows no rim kit and the oil pump is non adjustable. Looks to be 291 only, possibly 271.
Not to say that aftermarket may make one, but must be for non adjustable.

Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it! Seems like the easiest thing to do would be to just leave the spur sprocket on this particular saw.

Just to satisfy my own curiosity, what is different about the sprocket between the two different oil pumps?

Thanks again!

Change the spur if it has dents that prohibit the chain from moving side to side on the spur, nothing wrong with spur drums you just need to change them as they wear

Understood, thank you. This one isn't badly worn yet, but I have rim sprockets on all my other saws and was looking ahead to replacement time for this one. This is by no means my favorite saw, in large part because I feel it under-oils the bar/chain and cannot be adjusted, so I think when the time comes I'll just buy another spur drum.

Thanks for the help!
